A Vespa Sei Giorni?

The Vespa Sei Giorni is among the most sought-after collectors items. A Vespa Sei Giorni, but what’s it all about?

In 1951 the Vespa company’s racing team “Piaggio Squadra Corse” gained massive attention during a race. The “Sei Giorni Internationale” took place from the 18th to the 23rd Septemper 1951 in Varese, in the hinterland of Lake Maggiore in Italy. It was one of the hardest and most important competitions of that time: 220 participants riding over several kilometres in an off-road environment.

Rennen 6 giorni (6 Tage)

Sei Giorni = six days

Still today this six days reliability trial is known as “International Six Days Enduro”. The first race took place in England in 1913, a test of the limits of both daring racers and machines. And in 1951 the Vespa was just 5 years old!

For this race Piaggio modified a small part of three hundred 125cc Vespa models. The racing team “Piaggio Squadra Corse” participated with these ten scooters. But how could the small Vespas, built specially for this race, compete against motocross motorbikes?

Surprisingly the Piaggio company’s racing team (racers: Biasci, Cau, Crabs, Mazzoncini, Merlo, Nesti, Opesso, Riva, Romano, Vivaldi) won the competition with their Vespas, outdoing the offroad motorbikes: 9 out of 10 racers got a gold medal. In 1951, for this top performance the Vespa 125 “Sei Giorni” also won the prize of the Italian motorcycling federation and with their Italian Vespa models the three racers Giuseppe Cau, Miro Riva and Bruno Romano stole the limelight from all other racers.

Near-series racing scooters

The Vespa “Sei Giorni” was optically very similar to the series model. The main differences which were visible were for instance more tank volume, improved aerodynamics of the leg shield and a bigger engine cover.

Vespa Sei Giorni 2017

As we reported from the motorcycle show Eicma in 2016, in memory of this legendary success, Piaggio released a special edition: the Vespa Sei Giorni 300.

Vespa 300 Sei Giorni 2017

Scooter Center’s Vespa Sei Giorni

After the Eicma morotcycle show 2016, we got the idea of creating a new Scooter Center demonstrator which represents a fusion of the automatic Vespa and the classic Vespa. Just like our Vespa shop where you can just find everything you need for your modern or vintage Vespa.

We were inspired by this new model and wanted to release our own “modern” Vespa Sei Giorni. Alex Stroh (right) und Frank Winkel (left) worked on the project of our new Scooter Center Vespa Sei Giorni.

The genesis of the SC Sei Giorni

Our new Vespa demonstrator was a normal, slightly accident-damaged Vespa GTV…

Filled building foam?

The filled building foam was just a model for Mathias Laubsch from Blechwerk in Neuss, http://www.blechwerk.com/, who brilliantly transformed it into metal sheet.

Huge sheet metal and painting work!

For the typical “nose” we mounted a horn cover which is normally used on a Vespa VNA-VNB. We “just” welded the indicators and the hole under the tail light and Vespa Sei Giorni was brought to the painter…

All plastic parts got a silver coating so that patinatig could be made on “metal sheet” and not on bare plastic.

Then, all metal and plastic parts were painted with a deep red coating which was used in the 50s and then again with a second coating in grey before being painted eventually with the red varnish which recalls the typical coating of the first Piaggio race models.

Custom-made Vespa seat

The seat frame was made in our workshop and given to the seat specialist Holger http://www.sitzbankdoktor.de/ who sacrificed his old leather jacket and made the perfect seat for the Sei Giorni.

Racing handlebar!

The handle bar was replaced with a M-shaped handle bar by Fehling.

Vespa with race patina

In order to get the patina effect we used files and sandpaper!

LML – the last manufacturer of classic geared motor scooters

We took sad news from the English online scooter magazine Sluk .

LML, the world’s last manufacturer of classic manual scooters, seems to be on the verge of a definitive end, but we hope that the tide is still turning.

Who does not know the history of LML “click “(https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lohia_Machinery_Limited). In its history LML has built licensed productions of the popular Vespa models:

Mostly quite close to the original, sometimes a little more idiosyncratic, they were always popular low-cost entry-level models, which were particularly distinguished by their economy. The Indian reality simply required different priorities and so longevity and economy was a clear sales argument.

At peak times, 30,000 scooters rolled off the assembly line every month and LML was thus not only serving the Indian market. Classic PX models have also always been very popular in Asia, Iran and various African countries. Egypt was one of LML’s main markets, which unfortunately became their downfall: The devaluation of the Egyptian pound in 2016 made scooters so expensive that this market collapsed. Unfortunately, no market was able to absorb this hole and so LML stumbled even more.

Scooter Center visiting the LML factory

We first visited LML in 2014 and were able to see the production in the Kanpur factory live.

LML Scooter Factory

What we got to see impressed us very much and at the same time touched us, because to see a PX car body made out of a huge roll of sheet steel was an impression that gave us goose bumps. We were very impressed and it was simply unbelievable to be there live at the birth of a scooter.

LML has potential

At that time, we were convinced that “LML has potential! Although the haptic of some LML parts may not quite meet our expectations, they are of the highest quality. The LML gearboxes were installed in 30 HP motors in our workshop without any problems.

The complete LML motors are unbeatable in the price-performance ratio and the painted LML frame sets are a great starting point for a new construction. The rest of the original parts are also very popular with us. Unfortunately there is a lot of counterfeiting in India and inferior replica parts are simply sold in fake LML packaging. You should pay close attention to this and if you get a doubtful offer, you should keep your hands off.

LML has not only produced Piaggio models under licence but also made many further developments to which the original must bow: LML motor housing XXl overflow valve. We discovered these motor housings by chance in the factory. Until today we could not really clarify where they were installed.

LML Motor XXL Überströmer

On the one hand they have HIGH OBJECTIONS (why weld and mill them ?!) on the other hand the cylinder base was smaller than on the Piaggio engines. (we offer the housings already spindled to Piaggio size: LML engine housing XXl transfer tube)

Furthermore, the development of a 4-speed four-stroke engine in the LML PX dress must not remain unmentioned, because only in this way can the strict exhaust emission values be met and the gear shifting has (has) a future.

As the crowning glory we were there when the production of LML PK was rebuilt. The idea was actually a good one. A small frame with automatic motor and disc brake. It would have had a future for sure, at least e.g. as 50s in Germany. Fatally it was only available as 125cc and there was no mass market. We had a fork (shortened Lusso fork) sent to us as a sample and saw great potential for V50, VBB and Rally/Sprint conversions, but unfortunately this never happened.

LML recently sought salvation in the production of a tricycle for the Indian market http://lml3wheelers.com/. Unfortunately, this project doesn’t seem to have brought the necessary success and things look bleak at the moment.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for LML, that an investor will be found who recognizes the potential. It would be a pity if such a great company with enthusiastic employees would simply disappear.

Our tip: speedo cable replacement

Speedo cable bgm PRO Vespa V50

BGM PRO speedo cables correspond to the standard cables but they boast high quality features at a convenient price. For each vehicle model, the cable length is the same of the standard ones so that no modification is necessary for their mounting. Particular attention was paid to high-quality details which enable an easy and quick mounting: high quality sleeve and a well pressed cable in square form. The mounting of already lubricated speedo cable results therefore quick and easy.

LAMBRETTA

Today we first visited the hall 9 to have a look at the “new” Lambretta. Our friends from Rimini Lambretta Center present the new Lambretta customised for Vittorio in RLC race style as well as the new Casa Performance spare parts. Particularly interesting was the rear wheel rim with inner brake disc.

[wpanchor id=”vespa”]

PINASCO

Vespa rod models with reed valve intake

For Wideframe/rod models (low headlight) Pinasco presented the Nordkapp cylinder with its new feature: the reed valve intake. Of course there is also an intake maniforld, this time not for a Polini CP carburettor, but for a Dell’Orto 22mm carburettor which Pinasco will offer with throttle lever.

Besides the genuine engine casing with three studs and the possible reed valve intake, as already showed at the Vespa world Days in Celle, Pinasco also presented the engine casing with four studs: thanks to this feature it is possibile to mount all PX 177 tuning cylinders.

In addition, Pinasco also presented the Zamak rotor for the Flytech ignition which fits the rod models (faro basso) and GS150 engines.

Vespa GS160/SS180

The GS160/SS180 cylinder with direct intake looked like a dual carburettor cylinder with oval/long holes for 200cc models.

Vespa Smallframe

For the Vespa Smallframe models Pinasco also presented the new Pinasco engine casings and the crankshafts which are not yet available. On display also further crankshats with replaceable balance weights.

Vespa Largeframe

Particularly interesting was the new crankshaft for double intake.

Pinasco offers now premounted 225cc engines. 60mm stroke, 225cc, 21,5PS at 26 NM. 10-13-17-20/35 gear cluster with 23/64 gear ratio. Flytech ingnition 1,4kg. The item does not include: carburettor, carburettor casing, clutch cover, flywheel cover and complete brake.

The Si28 carburettors are now in VRX-R version with a small foam filter.

Mopeds

Also for Ciao, Si, Bravo and Boxer models there are new spare parts:

New brake levers for Vespa – Installation guide Vespa GT / GTS

New for Vespa GT / GTS: BGM brake levers for all Vespa GT, GTL, GTS models with a HengTong brake system. This CNC machined lever in high-strength aluminium is adjustable in 6 positions.

The lever is provided with a span adjuster on the lower side which enables you to tailor the lever length in order to achieve the most comfortable position and a perfect grip.

The lever is made up of two parts and it folds up in the event of a fall reducing therefore the risk of breaking.

The foldable design of this lever is ideal if, for instance, you park your scooter in a small garage.

How to mount Vespa brake levers

Tools for mounting brake levers:

  • Allen key 2,5mm
  • combination wrench or box spanner SW10
  • slot screw driver, size 2-3
  • slot screw driver, size 5
  • Torx key TX25
  • two hands, right and left, ideally with only one thumb on each hand!
  • open-end wrench SW17 (may vary depending on the model of the mirror)

Preparation

In order to have an easier access to the brake master cylinder, it’s necessary to take off the front headset cover. If you also have a windscreen remove this first. Under the rubber grommet and the master cylinder cover you’ll find the counternuts for the tightening of the mirrors.

The screw of the master cylinder cover can be removed with an Allen key 2,5mm from the front side. After wiggling the cover loose forwards and upwards, the counternut of the mirror is easily accessible and can be taken off with an open-end wrench SW 17.

Then you can turn the mirror arm anticlockwise.

Both mirror arms have a right-hand thread. To tighten the mirror arm turn it clockwise, to loose the arm turn it anticlockwise. In the lower part of the headset cover there are three screws: on the right and left side the screws are accessible from the rear side,

while the third screw is accessible from the front side, under the headlight.

First unscrew all the three screws with a cross slot screwdriver PH2 and then release the retaining clips. These plastic clips are not visible from outside, but accessible from the inspection ports one the left and on right side. Remove carefully the clip with a slot screw driver.

Another plastic clip is placed under the headset cover, in the middle. You can loose it carefully with a thin slot screw driver.

The front headset cover can be removed easily if the front cover has already been taken off. The front cover is fixed with a torx screw (TX) hidden behind the Piaggio logo. On the right side of the logo there’s a small gap, pull out the logo from that side by using a thin slot screw driver.

Under the logo you’ll find the only screw of the front cover which can be loosed and removed with a TX25 torx key.

The front cover can be removed by wiggling it loose forwards and upwards. This way you can push the front headset cover upwards in order to loose the retaining clips of the front cover. When the front cover has been removed, you can wiggle the front headset cover forwards and upwards and finally take it off.

Unplug the electrical connections and the cover can be removed completely

How to replace Vespa brake levers

In order to take off the genuine brake levers, remove the counternut under the brake lever support with a combination wrench or box spanner SW10.

Then loose the guide bolt, to which the brake lever is fitted, with a wider slot screw driver (min. S5.5).

Pull out the bolt carefully and hold the brake lever.

For the mounting and positioning of the brake lever there are two washers. Please make sure you don’t lose them when you disassembly the levers.

You’ll need the two washers again when you fit the BGM PRO brake levers. For a trouble-free mounting and for an easy movement of the lever we’ll grease the two washers in order to enable the correct positioning of the lever.

For an easy mounting of the lever on the right side of the headset you can slightly spread apart the throttle below so that you can have access to the counternut.

After mounting the lever, screw the guide bolt again and tight it with the counternut.

Finally, plug the headlight again and fasten the headset cover, first with the clips and then with the three screws, fit the mirror – done!

Vespa Wideframe Tuning

Vespa Wideframe models are more popular than ever.

There are not only refined new spare parts on the market, but also development in performance increase.
Existing cast iron cylinders have been refined to wring a little more performance out of them with a rather high input of work.

New Pinasco cylinder

Pinasco will soon offer a new aluminium cylinder with 160cc for the old Vespa engines with 3 studs.

Our loyal customer Andreas Nagy has always been a good friend of this slightly particular Vespa model. He puts a lot of effort in increasing performance of the Wideframes and closely cooperates with Pinasco.

He visited us on our dynamometer with a prototype of the 160cc V2 cylinder. Caliper Bracket 007

Secret prototype of the new Vespa cylinder

Caliper Bracket 009

We would have liked to take an even closer look on the 160 Pinasco.
Sadly the prototype of this cylinder remained hidden under the cylinder covering.Caliper Bracket 006

Vespa Wideframe racing cylinder

Andreas and we have tested some exhausts on our Scooter Center P4 dynamometer. For example a BGM PRO BigBox Touring exhaust for PX models, whose suspension we have modified to make it fit a Wideframe.

Leistungsdiagramm Prüfstand Pinasco BBT Vespa Wideframe

Performance characteristic dynamometer Pinasco Vespa Wideframe cylinder prototype

10HP and 100 km/h

Sure: a Malossi MHR reaches more than 35HP almost easily on a PX. Compared to this, the 10 horses of a Pinasco racing cylinder won’t take anyone’s breath away. But, please, don’t forget the original “performance” of Wideframes! Original 5HP would have a top speed of about 70km/h on a plain track.

With now 10HP on the 8 inch small rear wheel and a corresponding primary reduction, you may expect more than 100km/h. Just like for an original PX200 for instance.

We are looking forward to the potential of the Pinasco cylinder.

You will of course be kept up to date: here in the Scooter Center Blog!

Smartphone support for Vespa

We can no longer imagine a life without navigation systems and cell phones. I consider the use of smartphones with GPS as navigation system very smart. I want to use it, but where to put the expensive smartphone for it to be safe? And how to charge it?

You will see the best way of using a smartphone with your Vespa.

This support can be used to attach any smartphone with a screen size of up to 5.5” to your Vespa, providing that there are two M8 threads below the handlebar for mirror screws (e.g. Vespa PX, T5, Sprint, V50, Primavera…).

  • Smartphone bag made of neoprene, spray water resistant
  • Smartphones up to 5.5” size, e.g. iPhone 6 PLUS…
  • Support made of stainless steel
  • Screwed with winged screws for quick detaching without using tools
  • Smartphone can easily and quickly be removed from the side of the bag
  • You can still use the touch screen

Charging the cell with the Vespa?

No problem! All you need is a suitable voltage regulator and a USB port!

We recommend our extremely small voltage regulator for all ignitions with 12 volt. The regulator supplies alternating current and optionally direct current. This turns the regulator in the perfect and reliable replacement for any common voltage regulator and in an up to date add on to the existing electronics of your Vespa, to charge a navigation system or your cell-/ smartphone and the likes.

Easy attachment of voltage regulator to your Vespa

Connecting the regulator to the existing wiring loom is easy as pie: For an entire AC system you will need regualted AC current on the wires for the electronic consumers. For systems with AC and DC, you will need to differentiate between AC and DC and wire accordingly.
You will find some wiring examples here (in downloads on the right).

Shock absorber for wideframe Vespa

When it comes to Vespa, Pinasco increases work on older Vespas like Faro Basso, Struzzo, GS3…

The rear shock absorber for wideframe Vespa models is their great new product.

Rear shock absorber -PINASCO- Vespa Wideframe 1953-57, Vespa VM1, VM2, VN1, VN2, VB1, VL1, VL2, VL3, GS150

The Pinasco shock absorber fits those wideframe Vespa models, which do not have spring and absorber mounted individually in the rear shock absorber, without the need for further work on lower or upper shock mounts.

Pinasco PN 25441009

You may adjust spring preload and adapt the shock absorber to your individual preferences or varying load conditions.

The shock absorber is made in Italy and available in plain black. This makes the shock absorber fit discreetly in the general looks of a classic Vespa.

The two lock nuts only come to your attention on a second glance.

When exchanging the shock absorber you should also take a look at the upper silent rubber.

The Pinasco shock absorber fits the following wideframe models:

  • 125 (VM1T)
  • 125 (VM2T)
  • 125 (VN1T)
  • 125 (VN2T)
  • 150 (VB1T)
  • 150 (VL1T)
  • 150 (VL2T)
  • 150 GS (VS1T)
  • 150 GS (VS2T)
  • 150 GS (VS3T) GS3
  • 150 GS (VS4T) GS3

On offer: this engine casing for Vespa smallframe is very high in demand

We were lucky to coincidentally get hold of a few of these legendary LML SE engine casings.

Available in two versions: with e-start preparation and without e-start.

Much bigger transfer ports by standard

The LML SE engine casing is actually comparable to the engine casing of a Vespa PK125XL2. With only one difference: the transfer ports are much bigger than in the Piaggio engine casing.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 020

Replacement or perfect base for tuning

Easily spotted: Both ducts at the sides offer plenty of space for further amendments, which makes it easier to fit strong racing cylinders.

We demonstrated this with a Parmakit SP09:

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 011

You can see that there is space for further amendments of the cylinder base: Parmakit-base gaskets on the LML SE – smallframe.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 014

You will only have to invest a little time to perfectly fit such a cylinder to the transfer ports – unlike with a popular engine casing by Piaggio.

3-stud intake

The SE engine casing has 3 intake studs.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 004

The sealing surface of the rotary valve with its 42mm length is rather large, which makes the engine casing an interesting option as rotary valve for performance oriented engine concepts.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 003

Stable bearing seats – allow better crankshafts

You will find the bearing seat and the oil sump for the NBI needle bearing on the ignition side, as usual for PK XL 125. So you can directly use a stable PK-ETS crankshaft with 25mm bearing seat.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 016

The engine casings were developed for the gear selector fork of a XL2 with “one cable system”.

Motorgehäuse PK SE große Überstromkanäle 005

You would like to fit the casing in a Vespa with the usual 2-gear change cable system? You will need a conversion set.
Thanks to its precise machine production in small batches, shifting gears is more precise, which is the big advantage of this solution. The choice of high quality material additionally prevents wear.

SMALLFRAME ENGINE CASING LML SE
SE125 engine casing by LML India. The engine casing of the Indian LML Sensation 125 is a 99% true copy of the casing in a Vespa PK125 XL2. New Piaggio engine casings made in Italy haven’t been available for years. An engine casing by LML therefore is a very good alternative.
The casings are NOS-products, sometimes rust film on metal parts.

PK125 XL2 / PK125 ETS

The engine casing can be used as a 1:1 replacement for PK125 XL2 and PK125 ETS.
Delivered with an adaptor to attach gear change cables.
