Vespa Cosa Clutch Upgrade

SOLID BASE SUPPORT

The brake pads use an aluminium carrier, whose lugs for the clutch basket have a large contact surface. This makes the pads very stable over the long term. The slow shearing off of the plates, which often occurs with conventional clutch facings with steel carrier, is completely eliminated due to the large contact surface. The clutch is also thermally more resilient due to the aluminium. This is a great advantage in extreme situations (e.g. starting with a lot of load on a steep mountain pass road), but also offers a reassuring reserve in everyday life. The width of the flaps is manufactured for an exact fit so that the pads lie in the basket with almost no play.

DURABLE AND NON-SLIP CLUTCH FACING MATERIAL

For the clutch disks of the bgm PRO TOURING aluminium pads the same high quality sintered material is used as for the CR80 racing pads. Due to the larger contact surface in the TOURING version, the clutch engagement is softer and not aggressive. The large contact surface also improves the durability.

FULLY COMPATIBLE

The bgm PRO TOURING Alu clutch facings are designed as 1:1 replacement for conventional Cosa2 clutch facings. They harmonize perfectly with the standard steel discs.
The thickness of the clutch facing package is the same as the original, so that no shims or spacers have to be used. The clutch facings fit all standard clutches of the Vespa Cosa2 models, the PX125-200 models from 1998 onwards as well as all vehicles retrofitted with a Cosa2 clutch. The pads are also compatible with clutches/clutch baskets based on the Cosa2 technology, e.g. Clutch -SC-, MMW, Scooter&Service or Ultrastrong. (plate width like original = 14mm)

The pads are not suitable for clutch plates/baskets that have been specially manufactured to accept CR80 clutch plates, e.g. BGM PRO Superstrong 2.0 CR80, ONKEL MIKE ‘DDOG’ CNC or similar (plate width CR80 =16mm)

The bgm PRO STREET synthetic oil is a first-class and highly durable two-stroke oil which meets the strict Japanese JASO FC test standard. Based on an excellent base oil, many high quality additives ensure excellent protection of all components. The high classification as JASO FC makes it extremely low in smoke, perfectly suited for use in engines with catalytic converters. Why should I convert a Vespa to electronic ignition?

These are the advantages of an electronic ignition!

After the conversion, the former weak 6Volt on-board power supply has a powerful 12Volt light output. The previously self-regulating electrical system is converted to a reliable and bulb-friendly regulator control (e.g. with BGM6690). The high-quality wiring ensures a safe transmission of the high light and ignition power. With its strong wattage, it already provides a very good light output when idling, which does not collapse even when using the indicators or additional power consumers. No maintenance necessary! Maintenance work, as usual with contact ignition, is not necessary.

With our own brand bgm, we have revised and improved the thousandfold proven bgm PRO ignition base plate. Special attention was paid to a very high quality of the coils and the pickup.
In addition, the cabling was changed to textile-sheathed silicone cables. A special gimmick is the cord already attached to the cable branch for easy pulling the cable harness through the cable channel in the engine housing. Also the base plate now has a degree exact scaling for easy adjustment.

Compared to a conventional electronic ignition, the BGM Pro HP V2.5 ignition base plate has specially combined coil windings.
Through this the efficiency of the alternator is again clearly improved and offers with 120W a high light output.

In contrast to a Vespa PX ignition base plate, the BGM Pro HP has a longer and differently laid cable load in order to be able to mount the ignition base plate perfectly on older vehicles. Additionally it has an adapted base plate contour to fit perfectly on engines before 1977 (with a larger shaft seal seat than PX).

CONVERSION TO ELECTRONIC IGNITION

When converting from a contact ignition to this base plate, the use of a different fan wheel, a voltage regulator and a CDI is necessary.
A standard old voltage regulator, like the standard ignition coil, is no longer needed.
With the BGM voltage regulator BGM6690 an optional battery (12Volt battery required) can be charged while driving. The old wiring harness can still be used, however, the formerly individual circuits must be combined here, since the voltage regulator only provides one output for the complete power supply. It is easier to convert to one of our conversion wiring harnesses (e.g. 9077011).

Everything necessary for this is available individually or as a set.

PLEASE NOTE
The alignment of the crankshaft in the engine case, and thus also the position of the pole wheel, is much more variable in the old largeframe engines (recognizable by crankshaft bearings of the same size with 25x62x12mm) than, for example, in the later PX engines.

The crankshaft bearings are not fixed in the engine housing by a snap ring, but are only fitted with a light press fit in the housing. Due to various tolerances (e.g. the width of the shaft sealing rings, worn bearing seats, orientation of the cone on the crankshaft) there may be significant deviations from the originally intended positioning of the shaft in the crankcase. Prerequisite for a correctly working ignition is a perfect alignment of the pole wheel with the ignition base plate. Otherwise the trigger surface in the pole wheel will not run parallel to the pickup, which can lead to misfiring. If the ignition does not produce a spark, the fault is usually to be found here. For easy repair we offer distance plates (BGM8000S05) for the pickup on the ignition base plate. With these distance plates the correct distance can be restored in a simple way.

Tightening torques for bolts and nuts on the scooter

How tight should I tighten a bolt or nut on the scooter?

Here we have compiled a list of the recommended tightening torques of the manufacturers.*

Too tight!

It has probably happened to everyone at least once, KNOCK and the screw / bolt is off or the thread is broken.
No problem, if you have only destroyed a nut or a stud bolt, it can usually be easily replaced. It already starts to get annoying when you don’t have a replacement available.
Thread repair: It gets really annoying if you have destroyed a thread in the engine housing! This often becomes complex and usually expensive, especially if it cannot be repaired with a thread insert. Before the housing has to be replaced or welded, a thread repair with Weicon adhesive is often possible.

Too loose!

Apart from being too firm, there is of course also not firm enough! Nuts or screws that are too loose can be dangerous. You don’t even want to think about what can happen if wheel nuts or brake discs come loose. Loose carburettors, intake manifolds or cylinders quickly cause engine damage. Depending on the area of application, self-locking nuts or screw locking are the best choice!

In the right order!

In addition, the even tightening of screws and nuts must also be taken into account. Everyone knows this from changing tires, here they are tightened by e.g. crosses to guarantee an even fit. Also with engine housings and cylinder heads e.g. tensions caused by unevenly tightened studs should be avoided. There are even components for which a certain order of fastening must be considered. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions here.

Wrong way!

Right-hand thread? Left-hand thread? Normally nuts and screws are tightened clockwise (right-handed) and loosened counter-clockwise (left-handed) = normal right-hand thread. But there are also exceptions, such as the polar wheel nut Lambretta and left-hand mirrors: often with left-hand thread.

Solid!

For many applications there are special tools, pullers and especially holders, without which parts usually cannot be detached at all. You will find the tool for your scooter model after selecting the vehicle in the vehicle list:

Cylinder transfer ports in the engine adapt for performance optimization

Before the complete assembly of the motor can be done, all work that generates chips must be done. Only then can the housing be cleaned.

In the next step, this includes the ports of the cylinder in the engine.
The BGM177 is designed in such a way that the cylinder functions perfectly even on the original ports.
However, in our project we took the opportunity to directly adapt the case. A better filling of the cylinder always means a higher possible torque.

In order to transfer the contour of the overcurrent channels to the motor housing, the easiest way is to place the matching cylinder base gasket on the housing and thus transfer the contour to the housing.

The sealing surface is best marked with a foil pen. Then the contour of the overflow channels is marked with the aid of the cylinder base gasket.

A milling cutter is then used to adapt the contour in the motor housing. It is not necessary to mill the channel exactly as deep as in the original motor housing.

The BGM 177 cylinder is designed from the basic construction so that the piston offers a sufficient cross section.
The generated surface of the adapted channel may be milled rough. Further polishing is not necessary. As long as there are no more rough corners and edges, a slightly roughened surface is perfect.

The hard compound is the most abrasion resistant and can therefore be used very well in Endurance / long distance races. The warm-up phase for the optimum operating temperature (~ 80° C) is significantly longer with this compound than with the “medium” or “soft” compound.
The recommended air pressure for front is 1.2-1.3 bar and for rear between 1.4-1.9 bar.

Slick, mixture: medium

The medium bridges the gap between the hard and persistent as well as the extremely well adhering but also quickly wearing soft mixture. The medium thus covers a very wide range of applications. Its optimum operating temperature is ~ 75°C and, like the hard compound, requires a longer running-in time than the soft compound to reach temperature.
The recommended air pressure for the front is 1.2-1.3 bar and for the rear between 1.4-1.9 bar.

Slick, compound: soft

The soft PMT compound offers full grip even at lower temperatures. It wears out correspondingly quickly at higher temperatures and then no longer offers its full grip level. On the other hand, it reaches its optimum operating temperature of 70°C very quickly.
The recommended air pressure for the front is 1.2-1.3 bar and between 1.4-1.9 bar for the rear.

Slick, rain

PMT offers with the Rain Slick a new interpretation of an intermediate. Based on the rubber compound of the pure rain tyre, an intermediate with slick tread pattern has been created. It is ideal for changeable weather conditions with the same proportion of wet and dry sections.
The recommended inflation pressure for the front is 1.2-1.3 bar and for the rear between 1.4-1.9 bar.

Rain Racing

The rain tyre from PMT plays in the highest league of rain experts for the circuit.
Whoever mounted this tyre needs a good excuse if it didn’t work out with a good placement…
The recommended air pressure for the front is 1.2-1.3 bar and for the rear between 1.4-1.9 bar.

Drag race

The Drag Race tyres from PMT are ideal for all quartermill engines.
Here no grip is lost and all power is transferred to the asphalt without slip.
This also means that there is no mercy for clutch or gearbox..

How do I mount the tyres on a Vespa / Lambretta?

Using our bgm Classic tires as an example, we show the correct mounting of the tire (split rim).

1. Reduce friction

The tube inside is subject to flexing when the tire is unrolled and therefore it is useful to reduce the friction inside by talcum.
The white powder reduces the friction between the tube and the tyre and thus the wear of the tube.

A small amount of talcum powder is spread inside the tire and the tube is filled with air just enough to prevent it from expanding and also sprinkle some talcum powder on it.

2. Check the direction of travel

Before fitting the tube, first check that the tyre has a direction of rotation specified by the manufacturer.
This indication can be found on our bgm Classic tire in the form of an arrow on a tire sidewall and points to the direction of rotation of the tire when driving.
The tube is then inserted to match the direction of rotation of the tyre, so that the valve points to the left side in driving direction, typical for Vespa.

3. Assembly

For mounting the tyre on the rim, the so-called mounting paste is a real help. With it the tyre can be pushed very far onto the rim. This makes it much easier to screw the two-piece rim together.

First the valve is put through the wide half of the rim and then the rim is pushed into the tyre.
The narrow half of the rim also has an opening through which the valve is accessible. When inserting the valve into the tire, make sure that the valve hole is aligned with the hole in the wide rim half.

Our bgm stainless steel rims have exchangeable bolts. Please make sure that the head of the bolt is inserted into the square to prevent rotation.

The five nuts of the rim halves are fixed crosswise with 16 – 18Nm. When fastening, make sure that the tube is not clamped between the rim halves.
Then inflate the tyre with 2 bar and check that the tyre and valve are correctly seated in the rim.

Since 1992, the Scooter Center can look back on a great expertise in the trade with scooter spare parts, accessories and tuning articles. We supply dealers, workshops and scooter riders all over the world.
In our own brand bgm we let all our know-how for the development of new products flow in. Brand new are the bgm tyres “Sport” and “Classic”. The newly developed scooter tyres are of course Made in Germany! Our tyres are available in two different treads, initially in size 3.50/10, so especially tyres for classic Vespa and Lambretta scooters.

The “Sport” version has a release up to 180 km/h and the “Classic” tyre with classic tread pattern up to 150 km/h.

Why have we developed completely new scooter tyres?

Our goal is to be able to offer tyres that are safe to drive in wet and dry conditions and also in curves. The performance of modern engine concepts additionally requires a high speed release of up to 180km/h. The tyres should also look really good!
All according to the new slogan of bgm: “RIDING CLASSIC, RIDING FAST”.

All in all, these high requirements only allowed a consistent new development of modern scooter tyres!

POLINI ROAD BOX Vespa PX now available again

The Polini Road Box exhaust is now available again for small and big engines:

This Poini exhaust for Vespa is a very good alternative to the old SIP Road. The Polini outperforms the SIP Road over the whole rev band, both in power and torque. The early and high torque application makes the Polini Box the ideal touring companion. The well-thought-out design of the exhaust system makes it possible to maintain the low and pleasant noise level of the system permanently.

Of course we tested the exhaust ourselves and drove many kilometres with it. The quality and fit is good, even the exhaust paint on the manifold lasts longer than average. Harmonizes very well with the BGM177 cylinder.

TIP: Choose the carburetor spraying about 2-3 sizes bigger than a SIP Road

JUST FOR VESPA PX?

The exhaust was designed explicitly for the Vespa PX models. On older vehicles, which were built before the PX series, it is possible that the stop plate of the main stand touches the manifold. From our experience they only touched the angle plate of the main stand at Vespa Sprint, Rally and Co.

Our bgm BigBox fits of course on PX and the Touring without problems also on Vespa Rally, Sprint & Co. and is often a super alternative not only for these oldtimers. Choose between BigBox Touring or BigBox Sport, depending on the engine concept and characteristics.

Test Vespa Box Exhaust

Boris Goldberg, in cooperation with MMW Racing, has made a very complex exhaust test for the Vespa PX200 models on behalf of the very informative English online magazine ScooterLab.uk (SLUK for short). The focus of the test here was on the now very popular box exhaust systems. This means exhaust systems that are more or less similar to the original exhaust in appearance and sound, but offer a much better performance like the BGM BigBox Touring or Polini Box.

To make the results accessible to all readers, here is an excerpt of the most interesting tests.
In general, tests were carried out on two different engines:

  • Original PX200 12hp engine
  • PX200 engine with Malossi 210 sport cylinder, long stroke racing crankshaft (60mm stroke with extended intake control angle), SI24 carburetor

EXHAUST COMPARISON PX200 ORIGINAL ENGINE

The original PX200 motor is designed as a throttle motor. As a result, it offers high torque with a flat power curve.
Due to the short steering angles and small flushing surfaces, the engine cannot be operated sensibly with a classic racing exhaust. The loss of torque in the lower range is so great that there may be problems with the gear connection from third to fourth gear. The engine falls exactly in the range where the racing exhaust has significantly less power than the standard exhaust at shift speed. Under unfavourable conditions, the engine then literally starves to death in fourth gear and doesn’t get any faster than in third gear.
This is, besides the optical and acoustic inconspicuousness, one reason why the box exhaust systems have become so popular. These offer, with almost the same performance as a ‘real’ racing exhaust, a much more linear performance curve without any drop in performance. Thus, the engine with a box exhaust is usually much more harmonious and relaxed to drive.

The Polini Box and Big Box Touring are a perfect example of how a good exhaust system can help a production engine get started.
Polini has developed its exhaust system very close to the Big Box Touring, which was previously available on the market.
On the original engine, the BigBox Touring is clearly ahead in terms of torque and power:

POLINI BOX ON PX200 ORIGINAL ENGINE

The power curve of the original Piaggio PX200 exhaust always serves as a reference. In addition, an exotic, not for sale, was also included in the diagram (an exhaust of the special model PX125 T5 which was equipped with an exhaust manifold of the PX200).
The Polini Box runs very harmoniously on the production engine. It widens the usable speed range and increases the available torque and power already relatively considerably.
Compare the lower yellow curve of the original exhaust with the upper red curve. The motor speed is specified via the left/right axis and starts at 2800 rpm. The motor power is read via the vertical axis, the higher the curve the higher the motor power at the given speed.
The original exhaust reaches here 9,5 HP which is the normal rear wheel power of a 12 HP Vespa. The 12hp are measured at the crankshaft in the factory, without the losses through the gearbox, tyres etc.
The Polini Box achieves a maximum of 11,5hp, already 2hp more than the standard exhaust. The absolute torque is identical with the standard exhaust.

Performance data and improvement compared to the original exhaust: 11,5HP/16,2Nm (+2,0HP/+0,0Nm)

BGM BIGBOX TOURING ON PX200 ORIGINAL ENGINE

The BGM BigBox Touring runs on the standard engine again much more powerful than the Polini. Up to about 5700 rpm, i.e. exactly in the speed range for which the original gearbox was tuned, the BigBox Touring is significantly higher than the already good Polini Box. The slightly earlier end of revs at 7000 rpm (Polini 7400 rpm) is not relevant because the standard engine in fourth gear (due to the normal driving resistances) only turns up to 6000 rpm anyway.
On an original engine the BigBox Touring is therefore still unbeaten when it comes to early, high torque with very good bandwidth.
It gives the original engine, without other modifications, a plus of 2 HP. Compared to the Polini it also increases the absolute torque by more than 1Nm.
This is already noticeable while driving, because this higher torque extends over the wide speed range of 3000-5500 rpm, which is very important for everyday use.

Performance data and improvement compared to the original exhaust: 11,5HP/17,4Nm (+2,0HP/+1,2Nm)

 

EXHAUST COMPARISON ON PERFORMANCE UPGRADED ENGINE WITH MALOSSI 210 SPORT CYLINDER

The converted engine in this test is, despite the modified cylinder and crankshaft, still extremely tour-friendly and rock solid with, albeit very sporty, classic Vespa characteristics. The engine thus develops from the speed cellar at least the same power as a standard engine, with significantly better performance in the medium and upper speed range.

 

POLINI BOX ON PX200 ENGINE WITH MALOSSI 210CCM CYLINDER
On the Malossi Sport cylinder the Polini Box works very well and offers a considerable plus compared to the original exhaust (+5,4HP). Up to 4200 rpm it is slightly below the level of the original exhaust, but then from 6000 rpm it takes in air again and offers a good top performance.

Performance data and improvement compared to the original exhaust: 21,2PS/23,7Nm (+5,4PS/+3,4Nm)

BGM BIGBOX TOURING ON PX200 ENGINE WITH MALOSSI 210CCM CYLINDER
On the Malossi Sport cylinder the BGM BigBox Touring works perfectly and offers a very high torque virtually from idle. At 5000 rpm it is a whole horsepower more powerful than the Polini Box and reaches its power peak already at 6000 rpm. So here too the name says it all and every touring rider is on the safe side with the BigBox Touring in terms of perfect rideability and thrust from the rev cellar. Compared to the standard exhaust, +3.5Nm are taken out of the engine here, all this at a significantly lower speed level. If you are in a hurry, you can benefit from the wide speed range of the BBT which still allows the engine to turn easily up to 7500 rpm with a lot of power at the rear wheel. With a standard gearbox this is already over 125km/h, whereas such an engine pulls a longer gear ratio without any problems. Fast motorway stages are therefore not only no problem despite the early onset of torque, they are also a lot of fun!

Performance data and improvement compared to the original exhaust: 19,9HP/23,8Nm (+4,1HP/+3,5Nm)

BGM BIGBOX SPORT ON PX200 ENGINE WITH MALOSSI 210CCM CYLINDER
Friends of the classic two-stroke characteristic will love the BGM BigBox Sport. If you expect the resonance kick*, turning out a wide range and at the same time a high peak performance, you’ve come to the right place. On the Malossi Sport cylinder she is still a bit underchallenged, but this one is ideal for all those who want to expand their engine concept. The Malossi Sport cylinder is perfectly suited for this purpose, as it offers the same overcurrent layout as the much stronger MHR brother.
The latter works best on a diaphragm controlled inlet (or a heavily reworked rotary vane inlet) together with a large carburettor. Therefore, MHR was not used as a basis in this test. However, increasing the head angle as well as the exhaust window quickly brings the Malossi Sport cylinder into very high performance regions. Engine outputs of well over 25 hp are then possible without any problems with the BBS, as the BigBox Sport is also known in short form.
But even on an engine that is still quite conventionally constructed, as used in this test, the BBS has the winning crown in terms of top performance. The nice thing about it is that despite the highest power peak in the test field up to 5000 rpm it runs almost as powerful as a standard exhaust. This is rather unusual for exhaust systems with high peak performance. But from 5000 rpm there is no holding anymore and the exhaust starts to charge fully. The high peak power is then maintained over a wide speed range. Perfect for chugging through the city without attracting attention and for getting the performance hammer out in between. As already mentioned, the BigBox Sport works much better on more powerful engines and does not stop at a power of more than 30HP/30NM (see also the performance diagrams in the online shop). In summary, one can say that the BBS is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The key spiral – a classic newly discovered

I had one – everyone used to have one and it was ‘cool’, the key spiral! And this video makes my heart race:

We scooter riders, mods & scooterboys quickly discovered this practical spiral for us: because the different key types for ignition lock, steering lock and/or luggage compartment lock can be connected flexibly but safely.

With this super lanyard, all keys form a unit, but do not hinder each other during operation: ignition key and steering lock/luggage compartment key remain in their lock and are connected by the key spiral. So each of the two keys is quickly at hand and the flexible PVC material protects the paint.

We have the key spirals in 15cm-60cm (the 15cm version can be stretched to 60cm) and 30cm-100cm (the 30cm version can be stretched to 100cm) length. The coloured versions are translucent, i.e. they are coloured but still transparent.

Fitted with a key ring on both sides.

  1. TIP : Also ideal to attach e.g. the house and car keys to the trousers!
  2. TIP : The tape can be deformed with a hair dryer at will, e.g. if the angled end should be straight.

The chosen Beral brake pad for our bgm brake shoes with an average pad hardness of 71 shore shows itself optimally and offers a clear feedback at the brake lever.

ENVIRONMENT

The BGM brake pad material is manufactured without the use of solvents. It contains no heavy metal compounds and of course no asbestos. The BGM PRO brake pads are deliberately not painted for environmental reasons. Manufactured according to ECE R-90.
