How to get the Lambretta gear changing work perfect and smooth?

We take a close look at the controls and what can be done down from the headset thru the cables to the gear swivel and gear selector arm on the engine casings.

Let’s face it the last Lambrettas have left the Innocenti factory half a century ago. And not everyone has been maintained and serviced regular and as it should be done. One of the many beauties on the Lambrettas is that they are very simple to work on, especially with the right tools, right parts and the right hints (Sticky). There are three areas to look at:

  • Handlebar / headset
  • Cables
  • Engine casing

 

Lambretta handlebar / headset

Thru the Li family there had been different changes on the internals of the headset. On well- maintained bikes most of the time taking everything apart, cleaning and put it properly greased and lubricated can do the job. When you are up the job, it won’t do no harm to renew all the bushings in the headset. These are the guides for the gear and throttle rods. Available as handy sets from Casa Lambretta:

Once everything is properly rebuild and any slack is taken out –especially of the gear change housing and the gearchange rod- you are done with the headset and can have a look at the cables.

Essential are Teflon / PTFE lined cables. These run super smooth and are maintenance free. The bgm cable sets are especially made for the Li family Lambretta and have some unique features. It’s time to fit the inner cables. On the brake and clutch levers use a good blob of grease to keep everything well lubricated. Especially the lever screw, the trunnion of the inner cable and all operating and moving parts.

Topp Tipp: If the bolts of the clutch and brake lever are not properly greased they can wear off the holes in the light switch housing and gear change housing. These can easily been repaired with the oversize bolt:

The most important thing is to avoid any unwanted slop in the gear swivel, tie rodgear change and the the selector arm. Luckily there are many different choices for everyone’s tasting available.

in2014 to see the
production process for ourselves and to visit the LML factory in Kampur?

Our “souvenir” was a few containers full of complete LML frame sets with all necessary sheet metal parts, already painted. These body kits are a great replacement for Vespa PX frames.

In 2015 we were able to unpack the first boxes and offer these popular restoration sets for the PX series.

Yes, there were rumors and somehow it was to be expected, but we were still very upset when we
had to report the end of LML
not even 2 years later
:2016. Since then there are only remnants of the parts, which are or were mostly a good, often the only alternative for original Piaggio Vespa parts.

In 2019 Maryzabel has started to build Platónika based on an LML set and one of the last LML motor housings and LML fork for disc brakes. Sweetened with many great bgm PRO parts, such as the 187cc cylinder for being the heart of the whole project.

2020 – now is the time! It has come as it had to come: Also the stock of our LML frame sets for Vespa PX is now coming to an end. Just in time for the beginning of autumn we give you the chance to order the very last LML body kits.

Piaggio Ciao Monoantrieb oder Varioantrieb?

Differences Piaggio Ciao / Bravo / Si / Boxer mono drive and vario drive

Attention! The most important thing directly in advance – The components of the mono drive and the variator drive are not compatible or mixable with each other! The crankshaft is the same for both types of drive.

From the outside, this transmission ratio is most easily recognised by the side covers on the left in the direction of travel.
If the side cover also has a bulge at the back, it is a variator model.

In the variator model, the converter unit with the integrated clutch is located at the rear. In the front is the variator. The mono gearbox can be recognized by the fact that the gearbox shaft protrudes only approx. 13mm from the gearbox and only the flat belt pulley is installed (5). This has a diameter of 90mm at 25km/h mopeds. The standard transmission of the Ciao has a ratio of 10,5:1, the Bravo has a ratio of 8,5:1

Useful upgrades or tuning of the transmission ratio

Mono transmission:

The simplest tuning to increase the top speed is to lengthen the gear ratio.

There are exactly three possibilities with the mono transmission:

  1. Change the front clutch, take the clutch out of the moped and put the clutch in at 30 km/h.
    The standard clutch has an inner diameter of 26mm, the 30km/h clutch of 41mm.
  2. Replace the rear pulley. The original pulley of the Ciao has a diameter of 90mm.
    But only the pulleys with 70mm or 80mm are really drivable, because the suit is still acceptable here when starting.
  3. Exchange of the transmission. To find out the gear ratio look briefly under: https://blog.scooter-center.com/piaggio-mofa-tuning-und-setup/

 

INFO: The standard moped transmission of the Ciao has a ratio of 10.5:1, by installing the 8.5:1 transmission of the Bravo, the total gear ratio is increased by about 20%.

TIP: Very inconspicuous because clutch and pulley can remain original.

WHY SHAFT SEALING RING MADE OF FKM/VITON®

The material FKM (fluorocarbon rubber) is extremely resistant to heat, friction and fuel/ethanol. Current super fuel in Germany already contains up to 5% ethanol per se.

In other countries the ethanol/alcohol content is significantly higher. Conventional radial shaft seals can swell or soften when in contact with fuels containing ethanol.
The bgm PRO FKM/Viton® shaft seals offer perfect protection against this. In addition, Viton is twice as temperature resistant as conventional (blue) NBR shaft sealing rings , has very good gas impermeability and is also very resistant to ageing.

WHAT ARE THE SIMMERRINGS SUITABLE FOR?

An engine equipped with bgm PRO FKM/Viton® rotary shaft seals can therefore also be operated with E10 fuel (10% alcohol content). The high-quality brown Viton®* sealing material is permanently resistant to alcohol and is also suitable for engines with high temperature loads and high speeds.

From the 5th to the 6th of September our friends and long time customers from the Lambretta Club Stockholm celebrated their 25th anniversary. The actual Covid situation made it to an event for Club members only.

From October 2020 the shop will be closed on Saturdays. From Monday to Friday the shop is open from 13 h to 18 h.

Why is that?

To be honest, this was not an easy decision for us. Our opening hours have hardly changed in almost 30 years. Okay, in the early days there was sometimes a sign in the window that was closed because we went on a run. Which wasn’t a big deal, since that’s where we met.

The times are changing and with it the service idea has to go along with it. In the last years the rush on Saturday was partly so enormous that the shop was full to the last place and numbers had to be drawn like at the supermarket counter. Our cash desk workplaces were filled to the last place and also the use of temporary staff in the warehouse to shorten the ways of the guys from the cash desk did not really ease the situation. A persistently unpleasant situation with long waiting times and much too much pressure. A situation that does not correspond at all to our service and service concept. But it also could not really be solved due to the limited capacities at the cash registers.

The Corona period has not eased the situation and we have come to the conclusion that we want to break new ground and thus make a better service experience possible. The fast and contactless pick-up by Click & Collect is intended to compensate for the limited opening hours of the shop.

When the Corona-related situation has eased, we will hold a Meet & Greet at our premises at regular intervals. Stay tuned!

Everything is different this year. Corona makes it possible. The date in June was cancelled, like many other events. Most of the scooter meetings fell victim to the epidemic. But then the Vespa Alp Days, under these difficult conditions, fortunately took place in the Alp Days Reloaded Edition.

We from the Scooter Center have been following this super Vespa meeting in Zell am See since the World Vespa Days 2009, when we were already the main sponsor and represented with a large stand and team. This huge international Vespa meeting was the birth of the following AlpDays event, which should take place for the 11th time this year. The Scooter Center is again the main sponsor and once again we were on site, albeit in this special situation with a mini team. What the two of us were able to experience in this short time was simply amazing: We started at 9:00 am in the morning with the Großglockner Bergpreis, I have never seen so many Vespa Rally 180 / 200 in one place before. Altötting – Cuxhaven and back. Almost…
Three men, three mopeds and a mission. A short drive from Mühldorf (near Altötting) to Cuxhaven.
The approximate route looks like this and cannot be reconstructed exactly because of the many small roads and field paths.

From the start there are five stages to Cuxhaven and the daily stages were always between 200 and 250 km.
After a short breather in Cuxhaven on the German North Sea coast, we went to the Scooter Center in Cologne in two days. There 1,600 km were written on the watches of the three.
Where the journey unfortunately came to an end for two of the trio and the mopeds returned to Altötting in the van.
The reason is a technical problem with the spare motor from the luggage. Probably because of the brute power development, the crankshaft broke off.
Number 3 continued the journey on his own and finished successfully on the axes of his ciao. I wonder if that was due to the 0.5 l beer can holder on the handlebars?

With the Platónika project, I get to know better and better to my partner in crime of this whole project and I am too happy to learn each day from one of the best Vespa mechanics I probably have met.

Beside he is also involved in the racing circus (on a Vespa of course) and -nothing more, nothing less- he is also one of the master minds in the development of bgm products for Scooter Center!

So -as I already know him- I thought it is time to have a look behind the scenes of SC and introduce to you Alex. Who many already know for his work, but few of his history.

The perfect indicators for your Vespa GTS conversion

We have already presented the popular LED indicators with dynamic running light from MOTO NOSTRA. Our partner Cafe Racer 69 also likes to use the indicators in their Vespa GTS conversions. Not without reason, because the tinted turn signals offer an exclusive and noble optics. MOTO NOSTRA indicators with dynamic running light for Vespa GTS

The MOTO NOSTRA turn signals have individually controlled LEDs and thus produce a fully dynamic running light, just as one knows it from vehicles in the luxury class (e.g. Audi A7). The generated light effect is very pleasing and offers a pleasant change to conventional turn signals. As an additional feature, the front turn signals have a bright white daytime running light strip in plasma look. At the rear the same technology is used as position light.

WHY LED? MORE SAFETY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY!

Besides this wonderful visual enhancement of the scooter and the possibility to individualize its GTS and thus stand out from the crowd, there is another important point that speaks for these great LED indicators:

This new technology increases the optical width of the rear end in the dark and significantly improves perception in road traffic. The bright LEDs of the turn signals are already clearly visible from a long distance. The running light is also optically better detected than with a conventional turn signal.

QUALITY

A special concern for us was the quality and fit. Both are on a very high level with the MOTO NOSTRA turn signals and therefore a high-quality alternative to the Power 1 turn signals.
In addition, the Moto Nostra indicators are always supplied with connection adapters. Therefore, there is no need to make any changes to the wiring harness!

 

APPROVAL: NO PROBLEMS WITH THE TÜV

Of course the indicators have a test mark and are approved for public road traffic (no TÜV approval required).
