The bgm PRO V2 variator for Vespa GTS in test

Our bgm PRO Vario for the Vespa GTS models is very popular. In this nice video, Marc from Scooteria tests the bgm PRO V2 variator on his Vespa GTS.

„A cheap and effective tuning measure for all Vespa Gts 300 riders. I compare it with the performance of the standard variator on the Vespa Gts 300 in the city, on the country road and motorway.“Marc, Scooteria

Conclusion of the test

  • Sportier: faster and higher in the rev range
  • Much higher revs
  • Much improved acceleration
  • Much more aggressive driving performance
  • Without annoying noise
  • +5 km/h top speed 125 km/h according to GPS with 13″ rims without discs

Vespa GTS 500

A Vespa GTS 500 is what many GTS riders dream of. An Italian engineer has given it some serious thought and visualised a 500cc model of the GTS, and the YouTube video has been very successful. Every year there is speculation in the scene as to whether Piaggio will bring it this year. Now Björn Dressler from Berlin has beaten Piaggio to the punch. With his project „La Mutata“, Björn is bringing his conversions with up to 44 hp and 492 cc legally onto the road. Before you pull out your wallet: this conversion is not done easily! It takes about 4 months and costs a bit more than most people carry around in their wallets: it starts at 15,000 euros. Marc from Scooteria presents the project „La Mutata“, a converted Vespa GTS 500, in his latest video.

La Mutata Vespa GTS

The conversion of a Vespa Gts to a 500 Piaggio engine with German road approval and at least 39 hp! Italian for „The Mutated“ – enables riding performance with a Vespa GTS that is beyond that of a 300. All installed components such as chassis and brakes are tuned to the higher torque and the significantly increased peak power. An absolute highlight for all Vespa tuning fans! A road test with the Vespa Gts 500 will be coming soon – subscribe to the Scooteria Channel and don’t miss anything else!

Vespa & Lambretta Thailand Bangkok

Delivery Mission with Lambretta TV 175 and Vespa GTS in Bangkok

Travelogue Thailand, Bangkok 2018

It is January 2021 and we are still missing the lifestyle associated with our chosen way of life. No Runs, no Nighters, no Racing and sometimes it feels like no nothing than Covid. So, the other day we were discussing in the Skype lunchtime meeting the subject of our business travels.

We did a lot and most ended up being sweaty and covered in dust and grease or over tired on some motorways with a hangover on our way back.

One of the ultimate highlights of all Scooter Center travels has been the one to Bangkok in 2018. We had the plan to visit the dealers over there and get a better feeling for the scene in Thailand. We are in general very far from being hypercritical and see the positive things rather than negative things. A lot of the complaining in the western hemisphere is not very objective and the usual prejudice when it comes to Asia is –let us face it- copycats.

Buddy Seat Lambretta Garage

We were really looking forward to see what would be waiting for us. Our first stop after we landed was visiting Buddy seat Lambretta Garage. A fantastic place with frame and fork jigs and an unbelievable level of artisanship. Starry-eyed as we are, we simply tried to find the place ourselves. The try was without any success and we had to ask a Taxi driver to call the shop to find it. As things were not easy, the shop owner itself came to guide us. And hey presto, we are in town less than two hours and are escorted by a Lambretta TV 200 to the shop. Not a too bad start for the seven-day business trip. The language barrier was sadly there, but the gestures between some Lambretta nuts worked well and we made the conversation this way.

[modula id=“100205″]

Lambretta Thailand Café

As we do not want to bore you to death with every single detail, we make it short. Our second stop was the Lambretta Thailand Café that hosts as well the Lambretta Thailand Shop of our good friend Toon, he speaks perfect English and took care of us for the rest of our stay in BKK. He really made the business trip to the perfect holiday at least for Philipp. Maybe even Ulf.

[modula id=“100211″]

Delivering scooter parts in Bangkok with Lambretta TV 175 and Vespa GTS

Beside our daytime entertainment in visiting dealers, Toon showed us all the cool places.

The places he brought us to deeply impressed us and showed at the same time how passionate and obsessed the folks over there are with anything Vespa and Lambretta.

The collectors we have visited are really a class of their own and bounded to their scooters and their pristine original conditions. Have a look at the funky accessories.

Ratchada Night Market

Another big highlight and a place where we could have stayed for eternity is the Ratchada Night market. A place with a few small Lambretta shops, lots of Vintage car shops, vintage stuff and clothing. Cafes, Bars, amongst others an old American fuel station (demounted in the States, brought over and re-assembled) and loads of other bits to see, eat and drink.

bgm PRO Variomatic for Piaggio Quasar engines, e.g. Vespa GTS

  • with extra long translation bandwidth
  • perfect draught and
  • high rear wheel power.

The bgm PRO variomatic uses a shorter and Kevlar reinforced V-belt than usual for Quasar engines. This allows our Vario to run a much wider range of ratios without the V-belt being able to touch the housing, as is the case with a Malossi Vario. As a result, the bgm Vario can drive a much wider range of ratios without the engine having to turn higher. A huge advantage, especially when the engine needs further tuning.

BGM2311V2 Variomatik

Engine power directly at the rear wheel

The countless bench and road tests have shown that the 250/300cc Quasar engines do not require a harder or different back pressure spring than the standard one. This means that the entire engine power is not lost in frictional heat but ends up where it belongs: at the rear wheel.

Vespa GTS Variomatic Test

With the Piaggio series variomatic, the engine runs into the governor much earlier. The power is therefore maintained much longer when looking at the speed axis, which is noticeable in a higher final speed.

Compared to the Polini set, the bgm Vario does not work at an artificially increased speed level to get an aha effect. The Polini Vario unfortunately buys its (too) high speed level with a worse efficiency.

Maintaining the same acceleration speed as the standard engine results in our bgm Vario-Kit, so that the engine is not loaded higher and the power output is pleasantly linear. In everyday use the superiority of the bgm Vario-Kit is clearly demonstrated in a direct 1:1 comparison.

Our Vespa GTS 300 demonstrator and catalogue

For more than 25 years we have been working on the supply and development of spare parts for the vintage Vespa. However, we also look to the future and don’t ignore the recent evolutions of the modern Vespa.

We bought our GTS 300 in 2008 and this is one of the ‘models’ used for our first modern Vespa catalogue.

On Scooter Center’s 25th jubilee, in 2017, we took the opportunity to facelift our Vespa and give it a new, tougher look. Our aim was to combine modern design and standout craftsmanship to create a Vespa with discreet style and, at the same time, cutting-edge technology.

Take a look at the results!

Vespa GTS 300 Tuning Custom Demonstrator - Alle Teile mit Link 😎

Scooter Center left nothing untouched on the Vespa GTS demonstrator. Some changes are extremely subtle. Stand-out features include the handcrafted dropbar, the modified front mudguard and the sports seat. Further fine features of this Vespa are the fork, shortened by 4 cm, the 13’’ wheels and the Brembo brake system.

In this Scooter Center-Vespa GTS catalogue we have linked all items (please see below). In this catalogue you’ll only find a selection of our spare parts and only the items we mounted on our GTS. Except for the one-off parts, you can find all items in online shop.

WHEELS AND SUSPENSION

For our demo Vespa we chose the finest spare parts and accessories. The Brembo brake caliper kit P34 (2-piston caliper Ø 34 mm) improves braking when you ride with a pillion. Combining the caliper with the bgm PRO/SCR12 Competition shock absorbers, which are adjustable according to the needs of your riding style, and the wheel rim/tyre combination Heidenau K61 (140/60-13 on a wheel rim 3.5 x 13), you will get not only a facelift of your Vespa but also an improvement of its safety features.

BRAKES

The high-quality Brembo racing brake technology is now available with German TÜV-certification.
The brake kit mounted on our Vespa consists of a Brembo brake caliper with 4 pistons. The anodised black aluminium adapter was developed by Scooter Center and has a TÜV-certification.

If you want to appreciate the high performances of a top-quality brake system you do not need to test them on a racing vehicle. On standard scooters Brembo brake calipers also guarantee superb performance: high and well-modulated braking power.
Piston diameter 2 x 30 mm + 2 x 34 mm, two-piece, cast, CNC machined. High-tensile aluminium adapter, CNC machined, anodised black, TÜV-certification.

The stopping distance of a Vespa GTS with a Brembo brake calliper is up to 20% shorter compared to a Vespa with a standard caliper.

Pillion foot peg adaptor for Vespa GTS & Co.

The GTS is a beautiful Vespa. But the story often goes that driving pleasure with pillion is reduced due to lacking space in the footwell.

We want that you and your pillion can fully enjoy the ride and have included nice foot peg adaptors in our program.

After having assembled the adaptor you as driver will have more space in the footwell and your pillion no longer needs to watch out to not bore holes into your leg with the tips of the shoes from behind.

3331666 (13)

Easy assembly

It’s easy as assembly.
Just assemble the adaptor in place of the original foot pegs by using the supplied screws. Then screw the original foot pegs on the adaptor.

Two M8 screws fasten the original foot pegs behind the folding mechanism. You will need a WS5 allen key to attach them to the frame.

3331666 (2)

For detaching you will need either a fitting ratchet or an allen key with spherical head.

3331666 (6)

Screws needed for assembly are supplied. Please be aware: each adaptor comes with two screws of different length.

You will simplify your work by fastening the longer back screw (seen from direction of travel) first, followed by the front screw.

3331666 (22)

Once the adaptor is securely fastened, reattach the foot peg with the original screws.

3331666 (10)

Thanks to the folding mechanism, the foot peg will fit tightly on the frame again without destroying the silhouette of the GTS.

Available in black and silver

The adaptor is available in black anodised or silver anodised.

We have designed a powerful and reliable companion for you.
We have put many ideas into practice to design a cylinder with the highest possible wide range of performance.

BGM1770

BGM177 was made of alloy, just like all modern cylinders.
Very good heat dissipation is one advantage, which is positive for lifespan, consumption and performance.
The cylinder hole is coated with nickel, silicon and carbide and extremely wear resistant. The forged piston is made of alloy and has two piston rings.

The design of the piston paired with a high degree of silicon in the material used, generated a lightweight of 193 grams with high thermal and mechanical stability, which is positive for torque and smooth running.
The piston rings are 1mm thick and are being produced by a renowned Italian manufacturer, which also supplies leading piston manufacturers like Vertex and Meteor. The thin rings minimise friction, which increases performance and make it possible to easily enlarge the outlet duct window.
The gudgeon pin is biconic, which means that its inner ends are thinner than the middle part, further reducing the weight of moved massed.

BGM177_8 011

Alloy cylinder with ceramic coating and large transfer ports

Large ducts and large transfer ports in the cylinder are the best basis for a wide range of performance and an early torque.

The BGM177 can be combined with simple serial components, like the original SI20 carburetor and an original exhaust. This already increases performance significantly. A modern designed cylinder leads to very low consumption at high torque in the low revs range.

Cylinder with vast potential for tuning

Do you want more performance? The BGM177 offers plenty of potential and possibilities to further increase performance with a minimum of work. The cylinder reacts very well to larger carburetors and support by an exhaust like the BGM BigBox Touring.

Transfer ports in the cylinder base can easily be enlarged. The two large transfer ports on the left and on the right are only slightly covered, so that you can easily open them up with a small hand drill. So you can either fit the cylinder to an already adapted engine casing or copy the duct profile to an engine casing.

CNC-milled cylinder head

The CNC-milled cylinder head has many cooling areas and the hole in the centre of the cylinder head prevents air of being stored in the combustion chamber.
It’s also possible to place a temperature sensor in the hole of the cylinder head. This position close to the combustion chamber grants a reliable measurement of temperature.
Placing a temperature sensor below the ignition plug using an adaptor ring or above the thread outside the cooling fin are commonly used methods, but they don’t generate reliable results. In these cases you can only see the temperature of the cooling air close to the ignition plug or the temperature of the cylinder head at the outside of the cooling fin. We think that these positions are simply unsuitable to gain reliable results. BGM therefore prefers a position as close as possible to the combustion chamber.

BGM177_8 016

Combustion chamber for wide performance range

The combustion chamber was designed to grant a wide performance range. A strong expansion exhaust chamber may be used after adapting the squish gap, thanks to the design of the cylinder head insert. With a 57mm engine displacement and a touring or box exhaust you can use the provided gaskets to adjust the squish gap to 1mm.
You are using the cylinder with an expansion chamber exhaust and 60mm engine displacement? We would recommend starting with a squish gap of 1.2mm.

Timings 57mm

With an engine with a stroke of 57mm and a squish gap of 1mm, you will reach the following values:

  • Compression 10.3:1
  • Transfer timing 118°
  • Exhaust timing 171°

Thanks to the dimension of the cylinder you will only need a 4mm gap to centre the cylinder head in the hole. The gap will prevent the cylinder head to stick out into the combustion chamber, even if you adapt the engine displacement. With an engine displacement of 60mm and depending on the engine concept you can lift the cylinder even further to achieve significantly larger transfer port angles.

Timings 60mm

With an engine with a stroke of 60mm and a squish gap of 1mm, you will reach the following values:

  • Compression 10.8:1
  • Transfer timing 123°
  • Exhaust timing 173°

The outlet width is 42mm (66%) and therefore offers positive conditions for an engine with high torque at small trigger delay angles.

BGM177 vs PX 200 12HP

Plug & play with a lot of power

This is a comparison between a BGM177 and a standard Rally200 with 12HP Piaggio cylinder (comparable to a Vespa PX200 GS).

The BGM177 cylinder has not been adapted for this experiment and is used with a Sprint Veloce engine.
Intake, crankshaft and engine ports have not been adapted.
We only attached a SI24 carburetor of the 200cc models without adapting the carburetor box or engine casing and combined it with a BGM BigBox Touring.

Jets are very similar to those of a standard 200cc version:
Main air correction jet: 160
Atomiser: BE3
Main jet: 125
Idle jet: 55/160
Air filter: standard (no additional holes)

Ignition advance was adjusted to 19° before the upper dead centre .

You can clearly see the wide range of performance (straight line) and the high torque (dotted line) at idling even with a non-adjusted engine.

BGM177_ROTARY_vs_PX200_std [table id=3 /]

The next post will be on increasing performance with this cylinder and a LML reed valve engine will serve as basis.

Installation guide Vespa shock absorbers

Easy installation of the new suspension

Installing these shock absorbers is relatively easy. We have summed some hints and the most important steps of installation up for you:

In order to guarantee a well and safe installation you should place your Vespa on a level and firm ground.

08.01.2016 182

In order to exchange the front shock absorber, the front wheel should be freely accessible. It would be easiest to either shim your Vespa under the frame or to use a jack to lift the front wheel. By doing so you can jack up your Vespa without someone to help.

08.01.2016 185

Unscrewing the five screws of the front wheel rim is easiest when the front wheel is blocked.

08.01.2016 208

Do you have a lock for the brake lever? In that case this security lock could be the substitute for a third hand. This task can also be accomplished by cargo lashing or, if you don’t have anything else, by cable straps. A blocked front wheel will also come in handy when working at the rear. Your scooter won’t roll away.

08.01.2016 220

08.01.2016 221

First use an angled hex wrench to unscrew the lower two mounting screws.

08.01.2016 289

Next are the two nuts of the upper shock mount. Once you took these off, you can easily remove the shock absorber in direction of the front wheel.

08.01.2016 286

To loosen the upper nut, you may hold the shock absorber at the dome top cap.

08.01.2016 163

Once you removed the upper mount, quickly check the silent rubbers. The rubbers are hard or brittle? It would be best to replace them. 08.01.2016 167

The BGM shock absorber also has two assembly aids, which can be used to hold the absorber during installation. 08.01.2016 172

You must not hold the absorber’s piston rod with pliers or any similar tool. Marks on the surface of the piston rod caused by a tool, would immediately lead the shock absorber to leak when snapping in.

Once the mount is installed, you may place the absorber from the side of the wheel. BGM shock absorbers are supplied with spacer shims to make up for gaps between shock absorber and brake caliper.

08.01.2016 296

08.01.2016 298

Should you need the spacer, you may first fix it with a screw through the lower hole and then place the absorber on top of the mount of the brake caliper and the spacer shim.

08.01.2016 307

Once the screw in the upper hole and the spacer shim fixes the shock absorber, you may correctly position and fix the absorber. 08.01.2016 308

The steering tube secures the screws of the upper mount.

08.01.2016 310

Simply secure the mounts of the shock absorber with nuts from below.

08.01.2016 312

Once you reinstalled the front wheel with the five hex socket screws, you may now address the rear shock absorbers.

The lower mount of the shock absorber is hidden on the left hand side of the vehicle behind the air filter box.

08.01.2016 314

You have to lift the air filter box to access the mount.

To lift the air filter box you need to unscrew the two back screws and loosen the front screw. You don’t need to fully remove the air filter box.

The exhaust on the right hand side of the Vespa blocks access to the lower shock mount.

08.01.2016 242

Beware: Did you just go for a ride on your Vespa? It would be better to postpone your work until exhaust and engine have cooled down.

The exhaust is fixed with three screws and the clamp of the manifold. Wires of the lambda sensor or cooling hoses might be close to the clamp. Please watch out and don’t damage these parts.

It would be handy to loosen the clamp of the manifold first, before unscrewing the screws of the rear swing arm, which fix the exhaust body.

Please watch out: when unscrewing the last screw, the exhaust might fall down. You can now pull the exhaust from the manifold.

GTS shock35

Original Piaggio exhausts have a graphite gasket between exhaust and manifold. This gasket is sensitive to mechanic strains and should be replaced in case of visible damage.

08.01.2016 402

In order to remove the shock absorber from the frame, you have to remove the helmet box and the cover of the seat lock.

You can simply lift the helmet box.

Four screws fix the back cover to the vehicle.

08.01.2016 328

Once you removed the screws, you only need to take off the cover of the tank cap.

Just in case, put the cover immediately back on the fuel filler.

You will find the upper fixation points of the two shock absorbers on the right and on the left of the seat lock. Please check the secure stand of your Vespa, before removing them. The front wheel should be blocked and should touch the ground.

08.01.2016 336

Loosening the two upper fix points of the shock absorber will cause the engine to lower down. So please watch the shims and silent rubbers.

After removing the nut you can simply pull the shock absorber from the bolt of the swing arm. Pull downwards out of the frame.

You will find another silent rubber on the shock absorber. After a short -positive- check, it can be reused. 08.01.2016 367

When removing the left shock absorber you have to watch out for the two bushes of the lower mount.

Lightswitch 564

Place these two bushes in the eye of the BGM shock absorber. These two bushes are obligatory for a safe installation of the left shock absorber.

Watch out for the correct alignment of the lower mounts.

When watching from behind in direction of travel, the mounts are placed to the right at both absorbers. LH shock Vespa GTS

The sequence of installation remains the same for the upper mount. The silent rubber is followed by the large shim. Now secure the absorber with the two included nuts.

08.01.2016 371

Once you reassembled the cover of the seat lock, helmet box, exhaust and air filter box, you may start with test rides for your suspension.
