News for the season start 2018: new Benelli gearbox for Vespa Smallframe.

The Stefano Benelli from the Italian gearbox manufacturer will launch soon a reinforced gearbox for Vespa Smallframe engines.

The BULL-6 gearbox is made up of a specially designed gear selector and Benelli gear wheels.

This particular Vespa gear selector with six arms can distribute the load on a wider surface.

 

 

Clean gear change, reduced wear – the 50HP+ gearbox

According to Stefano Benelli, the six arm gear selector of the new Benelli gearbox for Smallframe reduces the wear and improves the ease of gear selection as well as the transmission reliability. The gearbox has already been tested by the scooter riders of the highest performance categories of the Italian IDC competition. The BULL-6 gearbox also fits engines with over 50 HP.

The plug-and-play gearbox including the reinforced drive shaft is available in the already known ratio of the GPR and BULL gearbox.

New bgm PRO Vespa brake hubs – from scooterists for scooterists

These Vespa bgm PRO brake drums have been developed by Scooter Center. While working on a project for the Vespa Wideframe Alex noticed that the brake hub required some improvements.

This lead to the development of a new brake drum, Made in Germany, made of strong material and with a top braking power. At the same time, we also developed the new brake drum for the Vespa V50 with 9 and 10 inch tyres. The performance of the new brake drums was successful, even in tough tests:

Please note: the brake drums are coated with an anti-corrosion oil. Before mounting the brake drum please remove any trace of oil (e.g. with a brake cleaner, see related items). Like all cast iron brake drums, these drums corrode if not protected and if exposed to moisture. In order to protect the outer surface of the brake drum you can use a heat-resistant exhaust paint.

The Polini CP carburettors, characterised by their compact design, are very popular and widely used.

 

The CP carburettor can be used to replace the genuine carburettor of the Smallframe models or to get more power on Vespa and Lambretta engines: indeed, it is characterised by a compact design and therefore offers much better setup options than SHB carburettors.

We decided to cooperate with the Italian company Marchald, specialised in air filters, and to develop together what we consider the perfect air filter for the CP carburettors.

 

High quality and broad experience in air filter development

The high-quality rubber, which Marchald has used for years, can resist to steady mechanical stress and chemical exposure.

In order to ensure a perfect adherence and to prevent any risk of slippage, the rubber perfectly follows the shape of the carburettor.
Thanks to the two grooves in the rubber and the clamp (also included in the item) the air filter is stably fixed in its place.

Together with its bell mouth the rubber perfectly adapts to the special shape of the CP carburettor, a shape which increases the performance of the carburettor.

 

Air filter available in two sizes

Depending on place available to mount the filter, we have designed this air filter in two versions.

The length reported in the item description refers to the length of the filter once it has been mounted on the carburettor.

The BGM air filters fit all Polini CP carburettors from Ø17,5 to Ø24mm and are available in two sizes: 30mm and 55mm.

 

 

For Vespa Smallframe: 55mm air filter

The 55mm version is a good option for the Smallframe models. Even though the shock absorber is fully deflected, there’s still much space between the air filter and the chassis.

For Vespa Wideframe, Smallframe and Lambretta:

The 30mm version is particularly ideal for the Vespas Wideframe since they can be mounted even in small spaces.

With a length of only 30mm, this filter is short enough to prevent any crash or pressure against the carburettor flap.

 

 

If you use this filter on a Vespa Smallframe you’ll have much more space around the carburettor.

Vespa World Days is an event organised by Piaggio which takes place yearly in a different country. The country or the local club submits to the Vespa World Club an application for the organisation of the event. For 2017 the Vespa Club Celle was nominated as organiser of the event.

The Vespa World Club is composed, for one half, of Piaggio employees, while the other half is represented by the appointed members of the national clubs.

The Vespa World Club appointed the German Vespa Club for the organisation of the VWD 2017 and this, in turn, appointed the Vespa Club Celle.

Vespa World Days: the great international rally

Would you like to join the greatest Vespa rally? You can participate as registered visitor and get lots of services or join with free entrance as daily visitor. Daily visitors are also welcome and can visit the entire event area with many spare part booths and exhibitions. You can even join the whirl of Vespas. The events in the evening, for example, are for registered visitors only.

As you can see, the Vespa World Days are not just a rally. Piaggio establishes precise rules and these are stated the in the contract with the Vespa Club Celle. Here are two significant points:

  1. Registration for the Vespa World Days is only possible using the online tool of the Vespa World Club.
  2. Login data for the tool are given to each national club or local club organised in the respective national club.

This means that you cannot register for the Vespa World Days if you are not a member of an organised club. How to join the event? You have two possibilities: you can join an organised club or found a new club. So if you wish to participate, please contact your national club for further information.

Why register?

The Vespa Club Celle is contractually required to differentiate between registered and non-registered visitors. 

  • All visitors have access to the Vespa Village.
  • All visitors can join the Vespa whirl.

Services for registered visitors:

  • Booking a camping place
  • Access to parties and concerts taking place in the evening
  • Access to the scooter parking at the event area

Clutch tool for Vespa

Our new clutch tool is a clutch extractor for Vespa Largeframe and a clutch compressor for Large- and Smallframe at the same time. This super small and handy tool in workshop quality should be part of every on board tool set and of every garage!

Quick, safe and gently loosening of tight clutches!

A securing nut tightens the so-called 6 and 7 spring clutches of Vespa Largeframe-models.

This screw connection often is not strong enough for power transmission.
Causing the woodruff key to shear off and the clutch hub to distort on the crankshaft. “Screwed” on the taper in this manner, you won’t be able to loosen the entire clutch easily after loosening the securing nut of the crankshaft as you usually would. You should rather expect fierce resistance.

Hint: Do you want to continue to drive with a 6 or 7 coil spring clutch? Use our special nut with hex head to tighten the clutch. Using this is a lot easier and safer than an ordinary securing nut.

You will no longer need heavy tools, large levers, which damage the sealing surface of the clutch cover. The same is true for working on or even destroying the entire clutch.

The extractor is made of high-strength steel. It engages with the clutch spider, grips tightly and pulls the clutch hub off the crankshaft.

Transport luggage on a Vespa

Packing correctly is crucial. You should tighten your luggage as central and securely as possible to your scooter. Best would be a bag, which lasts at least as long as your Vespa: the SEA’N’SAND T-Bag Vespa travel bag.

Have you ever had a breakdown due to an empty tank? Our loved scooters often don’t have the largest range, which might be even less after some tuning. Silentblock Vespa

Be honest – have you ever replaced the silentblocks of your Vespa? Even during a total make over this is the part, which is often neglected.

It might happen, that after many kilometres on the road, the sight of the most beautiful backside on earth is a little strange.

Take a look at the rear wheel from behind. If it is at a slight angle, the silentblocks in the engine casing will be past their best days.

Why silent rubbers?

Silent rubbers fulfil a difficult task: They are meant to eliminate unpleasant vibrations of the drive unit swing arm and, simultaneously, give a reliable and safe guide of the rear wheel. The silent rubber on the right additionally needs to bear the major part of the engine’s weight. Therefore, the right silent rubber bears more load and wears off quicker.

A new set of silent rubbers should deal with this issue. At least that’s what you might think…

Be careful with “OEM quality”

It seems that, let’s call them, “other” suppliers have by now found their way into the Piaggio bag.
Original silent rubbers are sometimes very soft, causing the engine to be at an angle to the frame, just by the means of it’s own weight. Loaded, which means with driver, it won’t get any better. Quicker Vespas with worn or too soft silentblocks sometimes tend to swing to and fro the longitudinal axis at higher speed.

Solution: load oriented silentblocks

We have therefore chosen a somewhat harder rubber for the BGM PRO silentblocks and decided for an even harder rubber for the strained side, which needs to bear the engine.

The harder, right side therefore counter acts the engine’s weight and is a safe guide for the drive unit swing arm.

The BGM PRO silent blocks for Vespa engines are marked with colours:

When determining the shape of the silentblocks, we decided for a version with two parts.

This makes fitting the silent rubbers a lot easier.
Tyre mounting paste helps to fit the rubbers.

Grommet and blank plug rubber for Vespa & Co.

When transforming or restoring a scooter it’s often the small things that are missing and then might cause the mechanic to loose his cool.

For example: a small blank plug rubber, aka grommet, is missing in order to connect the battery or indicator, or a plug rubber is missing to close a no longer wanted hole, because you want to fit another tail light.

It’s a sideswipe like this that really takes time and gets on your nerves.

An open hole in one of the side panels does not really add to the looks of a scooter. You could weld, polish and paint that piece. But you could avoid all this by closing the visible hole with a blank plug rubber.

A special Vespa on offer

Great general condition

The general condition of this scooter is in line with its mileage…- but at second glance, you can hardly believe your eyes: “This cannot be!!”

Taking a look at the left side of the scooter you can’t help but realize what has happened: The scooter’s rear end must have stood in water for a looooong time. Long enough for the water to mark its level on the side panel.

But it’s even worse. Sad but true: the footboard and parts of the frame tunnel must have been under water as well. These are scruffy. Unfortunately there is also piston seizure.

So, this is two in one:

  • great collectors item and at the same time
  • extreme restoration needed.

If you don’t shy away from it, you may precisely replace the sheet metal and maintain the original looks – or just put it aside as collectors item.

We were lucky to coincidentally get hold of a few of these legendary LML SE engine casings.

The LML SE engine casing is actually comparable to the engine casing of a Vespa PK125XL2. With only one difference: the transfer ports are much bigger than in the Piaggio engine casing.

Easily spotted: Both ducts at the sides offer plenty of space for further amendments, which makes it easier to fit strong racing cylinders.

You will only have to invest a little time to perfectly fit such a cylinder to the transfer ports – unlike with a popular engine casing by Piaggio.

Stable bearing seats – allow better crankshafts

You will find the bearing seat and the oil sump for the NBI needle bearing on the ignition side, as usual for PK XL 125. So you can directly use a stable PK-ETS crankshaft with 25mm bearing seat.

You would like to fit the casing in a Vespa with the usual 2-gear change cable system? You will need a conversion set.
Thanks to its precise machine production in small batches, shifting gears is more precise, which is the big advantage of this solution. The choice of high quality material additionally prevents wear.

SMALLFRAME ENGINE CASING LML SE
SE125 engine casing by LML India. The engine casing of the Indian LML Sensation 125 is a 99% true copy of the casing in a Vespa PK125 XL2. New Piaggio engine casings made in Italy haven’t been available for years. An engine casing by LML therefore is a very good alternative.
The casings are NOS-products, sometimes rust film on metal parts.

PK125 XL2 / PK125 ETS

The engine casing can be used as a 1:1 replacement for PK125 XL2 and PK125 ETS.
Delivered with an adaptor to attach gear change cables.

Non-damaging assembly

The mounting tool for primary drive wheels by BGM makes it possible to draw the large primary drive wheel into its bearing seat without causing any damage. It works on any Smallframe Vespa. The bushing of the assembly aid rests on the inner ring of the bearing only, which means that there won’t be any pressure on the sensitive bearing surface, the bearing itself or engine casing.

Adjust ignition of a Vespa using “the Whale”

The Whale is a tool, which helps you, to precisely adjust the ignition of your Vespa. “The Whale V-Duo”, a calliper, is suitable for Vespa largeframe and smallframe. A suitable tool for Lambretta is being developed.

The calliper is made of two parts and comes with measuring tips that can freely be moved and an effective measuring range of about 40° each. To easily define the ignition point for static and variable ignition timing.
