Vespa Cosa Clutch Upgrade

SOLID BASE SUPPORT

The brake pads use an aluminium carrier, whose lugs for the clutch basket have a large contact surface. This makes the pads very stable over the long term. The slow shearing off of the plates, which often occurs with conventional clutch facings with steel carrier, is completely eliminated due to the large contact surface. The clutch is also thermally more resilient due to the aluminium. This is a great advantage in extreme situations (e.g. starting with a lot of load on a steep mountain pass road), but also offers a reassuring reserve in everyday life. The width of the flaps is manufactured for an exact fit so that the pads lie in the basket with almost no play.

DURABLE AND NON-SLIP CLUTCH FACING MATERIAL

For the clutch disks of the bgm PRO TOURING aluminium pads the same high quality sintered material is used as for the CR80 racing pads. Due to the larger contact surface in the TOURING version, the clutch engagement is softer and not aggressive. The large contact surface also improves the durability.

FULLY COMPATIBLE

The bgm PRO TOURING Alu clutch facings are designed as 1:1 replacement for conventional Cosa2 clutch facings. They harmonize perfectly with the standard steel discs.
The thickness of the clutch facing package is the same as the original, so that no shims or spacers have to be used. The clutch facings fit all standard clutches of the Vespa Cosa2 models, the PX125-200 models from 1998 onwards as well as all vehicles retrofitted with a Cosa2 clutch. The pads are also compatible with clutches/clutch baskets based on the Cosa2 technology, e.g. Clutch -SC-, MMW, Scooter&Service or Ultrastrong. (plate width like original = 14mm)

 

NOT FITTING

The pads are not suitable for clutch plates/baskets that have been specially manufactured to accept CR80 clutch plates, e.g. BGM PRO Superstrong 2.0 CR80, ONKEL MIKE ‘DDOG’ CNC or similar (plate width CR80 =16mm)

SCOPE OF DELIVERY

The set contains:

  • 1x clutch cover plate (one-sided lining)
  • 3x clutch friction plates (lining on both sides)

Sufficient for a Cosa2 coupling.

Mounting tool for Lambretta Superstrong clutch

For our BGM Superstrong clutch for Lambretta now also the suitable clutch spring locating tool BGM8011TL2!

Thanks to this centring tool it will be very easy to hold the clutch springs in place during the mounting.

The BGM Superstrong clutch for Lambretta has an integrated compression system.

The clutch is provided with two screws and long nuts.
On the front side of the clutch spider there are two legs marked with a point which signals on their base a threaded hole for the screw.

Practical and easy to use:

The screws for the preload of the clutch base will be inserted in the two threaded holes.

The cutouts on the base of the locating tool are specially designed to guarantee more free surface for the high nuts used to preload the clutch for the mounting.

Quick and easy: as soon as the clutch has been preloaded, you can pull out the tool.

Our new clutch tool is a clutch extractor for Vespa Largeframe and a clutch compressor for Large- and Smallframe at the same time. This super small and handy tool in workshop quality should be part of every on board tool set and of every garage!

A securing nut tightens the so-called 6 and 7 spring clutches of Vespa Largeframe-models.

This screw connection often is not strong enough for power transmission.
Causing the woodruff key to shear off and the clutch hub to distort on the crankshaft. “Screwed” on the taper in this manner, you won’t be able to loosen the entire clutch easily after loosening the securing nut of the crankshaft as you usually would. You should rather expect fierce resistance.

Hint: Do you want to continue to drive with a 6 or 7 coil spring clutch? Use our special nut with hex head to tighten the clutch. Using this is a lot easier and safer than an ordinary securing nut.

You will no longer need heavy tools, large levers, which damage the sealing surface of the clutch cover. The same is true for working on or even destroying the entire clutch.

The extractor is made of high-strength steel. It engages with the clutch spider, grips tightly and pulls the clutch hub off the crankshaft.

BGM Superstrong – new drive plates for Vespa clutches

We have revised all plates and optimised their fit.

The plate on position two has now got a defined curve at an individual radius in order to generate smooth disengagement behaviour with any load.

The steel plates are series tested for smooth running and planar surface, as well as for quality of material and hardness. All steel plates achieve values around 10hrc.

Apart from optimizing steel plates, nothing was changed in the proven concept of Superstrong clutches for Vespa PX, T5, Sprint, Rally…

 

Upgrade for Vespa Cosa2 clutch types!

Higher performance, higher torque, higher anything… This is what the new engines like Malossi MHR221, Quattrini M232 & Co. have on offer.
The concentrated torque of these engines has to find its way to the road.
One of the most important connections between the pulsating engine and the road therefore is the clutch, with one of the most difficult tasks in an engine.

On the one hand you want every tiny bit of torque to be entirely transmitted to the gearbox and on the other hand you want a reliable, durable and easily usable system.

The more performance you had to rein in, the stronger the springs you use with cork clutch plates. At least this used to be the rule for Vespa clutches.
Such an “improved” clutch actually demands almost herculean force in handling, since you need immense force to pull the clutch lever – so this is not really a solution…

In order to grant longterm reliability of a clutch, you’d have to increase elasticity for performances above 35HP drastically. The same would be true for the resulting torque. Surface pressure, however, would be too high for cork plates.
When you put high pressure on natural cork, it will behave like a sponge, which effects behaviour and biting point of the clutch. This material won’t cope with deformation, torque and mechanic strains during sliding friction. Once the cork was put under high pressure and slipped, causing a worn clutch, the surface of the plate will burn and cause a loss of fastness between cork and steel plate.

The question is: How to achieve a balance of a well functioning clutch where you don’t need strength to use it and a high degree of transmitted torque?
All you can do is to use another material on your clutch plate with improved friction value and to know your physics…

Clutch lining used for motorcycles is extremely loadable. But there are no plates, which could directly be used with a Vespa clutch.
We therefore have clutch plates modified, like the one used in a VFR400 and in a Honda CR.

These modified clutch plates can easily be fitted in the well known Cosa clutches.
The upper plate will have to take the task of the top plate in a normal Cosa clutch.
This plate is modified in a way to also fit the clutch circlip.

The plate set and its modification change the overall height of the plate set. Original Piaggio cork plates are a little higher than CR-plate sets.
You can add another plate as reinforcement, in order to level size and to gain more stability for the top plate.

The CR clutch plate is made of a high-strength alloy and a lot thicker than steel clutch plates with an ordinary cork lining.
This is why the noses are less responsive to knocking off at the clutch basket. But wide noses won’t help, if the clutch basket dampers in the primary drive are broken or tired. Load peaks will be entirely transmitted to the clutch. You can prevent this by using a reinforced primary drive repair kit.

Stronger noses of the CR-clutch plates are also tight in the larger space in the clutch basket of the “Cosa-version” of a Superstrong.

Seeing CR-plates triggers one question: “How can such a small, flat clutch plate be better than the larger cork version?”
One: material with better friction value. Two: “effective radius”.
The outer diameter in connection with the height of the lining results in a certain radius, which is decisive.

This means that with the same diameter, the lever arm, which counters the torque at the hub, is longer, since the distance between the centre of the lining and the crankshaft pivot point is larger. Which basically is the simple lever principle. So to say: it’s “easier” for the clutch lining to deal with the torque.

As you can see, there are two reasons why a clutch with CR-plates can transmit higher torque at the same contact pressure of springs. It is general, omnipresent physics and the material used for clutch lining. The clutch plate sets fit any Cosa 2 clutch. Do you already have a Superstrong? The same set is also easy to use or you can compile it yourself.

A CR-plate set stands for a low movement of lever and a clear and freely working clutch. The plate material also guarantees easy and secure shifting of gears in high revs. We recommend to use oil with Jaso- MA / MA2 or API GL-4 specifications.

The new Lambretta clutch features some very unique and special details. And it can combined with standard Lambretta clutch parts and plates. So you’ll have a clutch where you can get parts nearly everywhere and in the future as well.

The clutches comes as complete sets with 46 or 47 rear sprocket and can be used for LI/SX as well as dl/GP clutch operating systems.

The well elaborated design with ten springs and six plates gives a very easy and smooth to operate clutch unit. Even with the combination of 15 teeth front sprocket and 47 rear sprocket, which puts a heavy load on the clutch it can easy handle even the most powerful TS1 engines. Mathematical the combination is capable of handling 60 Nm torque.

Rear sprockets with 46 or 47 teeth

You can choose between 46 or 47 teeth at the rear wheel. Plenty of windows ensure a lightened flywheel and enough room for the oil to enter and keep the clutch plates and bushing oiled all the time.

The sides of the rear sprocket are longer to give the option for different clutch plate and steel discs combinations.Together with the newly available bgm PRO front sprockets the drive train of your Lambretta can be uprated perfectly.

Clutch spider, pressure plate and top plate

For a very smooth and accurate operation the clutch spider, clutch pressure and top plate were re-designed from scratch.

The CNC machined clutch spider is extended and the legs are perfectly matched to the pressure plate. This gives a very easy release of the clutch unit even under hard acceleration from a stand still.

The even pressure of ten instead of five springs even adds to this.

As invented by Sticky we have two threads in the clutch spider to make compressing the clutch a cakewalk. With two screws and nuts you can easily compress the clutch unit for assembly or re-assembly.
