Off to the Promised Scooter Land by Vespa and Lambretta

We love Italy and recently toured beautiful Italy. Italy is obviously the birthplace of Vespa and Lambretta. VW Bus mit Vespa und Lambretta in Italien-sc

And how could things be any different: More than 23 years ago the story of Scooter Center has begun right there, at Lake Garda in Italy. Which should be the case for any real scooter shop.

Malcesine vespa lambretta italien-sc

Malcesine is located in the midst of lovely olive groves at the eastern shores of Lake Garda. It was right here that Oliver Kluger bought Scooter Center’s very first scooter (a Vespa Rally TS 125), which was then sold to “Mod-Volker” from Cologne. Volker is still driving this excellent Vespa, he was our very first customer and is loyal to us. vespa Primavera ET3 italien

Scooter Center – spare parts, add ons and tuning parts for scooters

Today we are rather focussing on spare parts, add ons and tuning parts for scooters. However, we are sometimes offering used Vespas. Scooter Center Italia

Used Vespa

Recently we received a large delivery of used Vespas. But first of all we need to gain an overview.

We will keep you posted.

The reasons for the last trip to Italy were two extraordinary missions:

  1. The most ugly Lambretta in the universe
  2. The most beautiful Vespa on earth

…to be continued

Shimming the Vespa transmission made easy

In order to be able to adjust the sprocket free play on the main shaft you will need the corresponding transmission shims and two thickness gauges (you really need them twice) for measuring the transmission.

vespa-getriebe-distanzieren-fuehlerlehre

It is best if you begin in first gear with a standard shoulder ring measuring 1.0mm so that later on when everything is mounted the gears firmly stay in place and you can properly shift the transmission into the neutral gear.

BGM6020 004

Beginning below the first gear using a shoulder ring that is too thick could cause the gear selector cruciform to no longer be in a free position between the sprocket segments and make it want to engage the sprockets in the neutral.

BGM6020 015

Therefore it is wise to first of all place the necessary shim behind the fourth gear. BGM6020 002

Checking the transmission free play

You can now check the sprockets‘ free play using the thickness gauges.

After mounting the parts the free play should range from 0.05mm to 0.15mm. In transmissions that entirely consist of new components you should rather opt for a tighter free play because the components have yet to “adapt to one another”. BGM6020 006

Do not choose too little free play

What you should not do either is overdoing it and allowing too little free play. This will result in the contrary of what you want on a running transmission. The hardened surfaces of the sprockets and shoulder rings tend to chew in, hence drastically increasing the free play within a short period.

If you want to replace individual sprockets of your transmission, we recommend that you order a set of shoulder rings ranging from 1.0mm to 1.3mm right away. And while you’re at it anyways, have a look at the gear selector cruciform. Do not try to save on transmission oil and replace it – and don’t forget to use new O-rings.

The right tools in good quality for your scooter will always help you do the job.

Protect your scooter from theft

Customers whose scooters have been stolen call us for help over and over again. Most of the time it is about precious collector’s items like the Vespa or Lambretta models. grip-lock-schloss-test-gut

Therefore, we want to point out once more that we have locks on offer. Unfortunately, you can never be 100% secure but it gives you a good conscience when parking your scooter with a lock system attached to it – even in your own garage/basement. Attach it to a chain and also an additional lock that makes it impossible to ride the scooter or push it away, e.g. the Grip-Lock – system, that locks the throttle and the brake lever in braking position and blocks the front wheel.

Grip-Lock test rating: GOOD

In the current issue of MOTORRAD (of 4 September 2015) in the advice section “Ratgeber” you will find a report about the Grip-Lock “Ausprobiert” [tried it out].
MOTORRAD rating: good

Grip Lock secure protection against theft for scooters
Grip-Lock is a long-life – high security lock

  • Suitable for almost all scooters
  • Cannot be picked with ordinary lock-picking devices
  • Very robust against drilling attacks
  • Maximum longevity and uncompromising security under all conditions
  • 3 year warranty

“RollerSzene” of the Syburger Verlag has already tested the Grip-Lock device, too:

„Of course, the Grip-Lock is no alternative to a chain or a garage. Yet, it is small enough to be carried along at all times, it is easy to use and during short breaks it possibly gives you the decisive plus in security against theft.“ Link to the complete article (in German)

  • Fits nearly all scooters, mopeds, motorcycles and ATV’s. 27-38mm grip diameter
  • Impossible to forget taking it off, contrary to rim lock systems

PINASCO engine casings Master / Slave for Vespa Largeframe

Improvements

Both versions feature the same reasonable improvements:

  • MATERIAL
High quality die cast aluminium with a fine surface finish
  • SEALING SURFACES
    Very precisely milled sealing surfaces
  • STRONGER
Reinforcement ribs near the main shaft bearing on the shifter peg side and the rear shock mounting plate
  • MASSIVE
Significantly more material used at the cylindre jug barrel’s sealing surface and at the caburetor inlet
  • BEARINGS
The crankshaft bearing on the alternator side is a large cylindrical roller bearing (NU205 25x52x15mm)
  • OIL SEAL
The housings are intended for being equipped with a metal oil seal (clutch side). Please use the type for the 200cc versions with a brown sealing lip.
  • LUBRICATION
Double lubrication hole for the alternator bearing.
  • FIT
Two additional dowel bushes = crankshafts with an overlong hub do not require the centering edge of the alternator side. Dowel bushes dimensions OØ=9,95mm, IØ=8,40mm, h=13,80mm
  • RUBBER WASHERS
The included silent rubber washers are stiffer and give the engine a better positioning in the frame
  • NUMBER
The engine casings do not have an impressed number or prefix on them
  • OIL HOLE
No oil drain hole for transmission oil = There no longer is a superfluous oil drain hole that shows whether the oil seal on the inside is damaged*.

*We recommend using an encapsulated bearing and an exterior oil seal with a correponding brake drum.

Buy Pinasco engine casing here

ROTARY VALVE VERSION SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Extra-large sealing surface across both engine block halves, fits all intake manifolds
  • Can be used as a 1:1 replacement for the standard engine casing
  • The 125-150cc version features the same crankshaft housing as the 200cc models and inevitably requires a PX200 crankshaft. The rotary valve’s width was adapted to the dimension of the 200cc models. The narrower gasket of a 125cc crankshaft will not seal the surface here.

REED VALVE VERSION SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Centered full surface reed valve intake
  • Comes with a reed valve intakte manifold, comes with a reed valve in a RD350 format (distance holes 58x48mm)
  • Intake rubber can be turned by 360°, carburetor connecting size Ø=34mm
  • Rubber washer fits Keihin PWK28, Mikuni TMX27/30, Dell’Orto PHBH28/30, VHS24-30
  • No moulded shaft for the oil pump control
  • No hole for an oil pump drive shaft

The dowel bush for the auxiliary shaft that is included needs to be inserted. The casings are meant to be used with an electric starter motor. Therefore, please use the flywheel cover for models with an electric starter motor. For those without electric starter motor, simply cover the hole in the casing with our proper tin panel (7671454). Should you be using other transmission components than the ones of the PX 125cc models, please check whether the auxiliary shaft is compatible and modify it if necessary.
Please apply a high strength locking agent to all stud bolts. The cylinder stud bolts are not oversized on one side as is customary with Piaggio. Therefore, also glue in the Pinasco cylinder stud bolts that come with the delivery. Please make sure that when screwing in the cylinder stud bolts, any oil pump cog wheel that may be mounted can move freely. We recommend cutting all of the threads again and cleaning them out with compressed air.

ASSEMBLY NOTE
The crankshaft bearing NU205 on the alternator side does not fit flush with the edges of the engine casing.
It sticks out about 1mm toward the crankshaft.

SCOPE OF DELIVERY

  • ROTARY VALVE
    • All stud bolts
    • Silent rubbers + washers for the silent rubbers
    • Casing gaskets
    • Auxiliary shaft bushing
  • REED VALVE
    • As above, in addition comes with:
    • Intake manifold including the reed valve, intake rubber washer, gasket and small components
    • NOTE: Bolts for attaching the intake manifold on the engine block are not included (see: accessories)

Vespa Faster Flow Vergaser hier kaufen

Tipp: bgm PRO Faster Flow Benzinhahn

Vespa-Auspuff Touring

The steamhammer

The BGM BigBox Touring is the tour steamer on our programme.
Developed for a solid push beginning at low rpm.

An early performance delivery and the significant increase in torque make our Big Box’s Touring version an ideal companion for anyone who likes to travel as a couple or with a lot of luggage. Sidecar bikers will appreciate this one as well. Due to the high torque available it is no longer necessary to shorten the gear reduction, which is otherwise necessary!

Vespa-Auspuff Touring

On a standard PX200 the Touringbox already sets in 300rpm earlier than the standard exhaust, the previous king of all tour bikers. On powerhouses like the Polini or Malossi sports cylinders this exhaust is just fine as well.
Of course, the Bigbox has a double walled structure and is filled with damping material, just like the standard Vespa exhaust.

Vespa-Auspuff Touring

The BigBox Touring

  • Standard look
  • Quiet, thanks to double walled structure and damping material as in the standard exhaust
  • High torque
  • No performance drop
  • Rev range like the standard exhaust
  • Very discreet
  • Also fits the Rally/Sprint without the need for modifications
  • Massive construction with clamp at the cylinder
  • Handmade in Europe

EASY ASSEMBLY

The exhaust is mounted like the standard exhaust. The header is attached to the cylinder with a clamp. This provides a maximum of stability and prevents damage to the outlet flange, in comparison to a loose assembly with an O-ring seal. The header features spring mount tabs. For maximum ground clearance, make sure to use a spacer that is long enough at the rear shock.

Vespa-Auspuff Touring

WHAT WE RECOMMEND

With a longer gear ratio the available rev range can be increased enormously at every gear. That way, the high torque can be turned into speed.
The ideal thing is to simply mount the BGM Superstrong clutch with a 24 tooth sprocket (23 teeth is standard). It works without the necessity of any further engine modifications and leads to an increase in speed by ~5km/h.

Engines with plenty enough torque are also compatible with the bigger 64 tooth BGM primary sprocket combined with the 24 tooth clutch sprocket (+8km/h).

CONCLUSION
A lot of steam at low rpm – yeah!

Nice retro ride-on cars made of metal

We offer excellent wooden balance bikes for scooterist parents‘ kids. But ride-on cars come before the cool Vespa or Lambretta balance bike.

There’s that total classic made from plastic which is present all across Germany – however, most of the scooterists to the bone belonging to the classics scene refuse to ride plastics themselves! So their offspring must have something adequate and stylish to ride on. We have found something:

“Genuine metal”

Genuine metal is a tagline in the Vespa scene. We now have excellent ride-on cars made of metal that suit this tagline:

Get ready for wild races! At the cockpit of this manoeuvrable red Baghera retro ride-on car made of metal, car racing will come to life in your child’s imagination. With this classic, terms like throttle blipping, warm up laps, starting grid, start, finishing straight and pit stop will soon no longer be unfamiliar!

World Vespa Days 2017 Celle

VWD 2017 – Celle

The official announcement was made 2 years ago: the Vespa World Days 2017 will be in Germany – more specifically in Celle.

But where is Celle and who are the Celle Scooterists?

world-vespa-days-2017-germany-celle

Celle in Lower Saxony in the beautiful Lüneburg Heath

Celle is located in Lower Saxony, about 50km north of Hanover and has a population of ca. 70,000 people. The town lies on the banks of the river Aller and is the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath. The castle and the picturesque old town centre with over 400 timber-framed houses, make Celle one of the most remarkable towns on the German “timber-framed” road.

The Lüneburg heath stretches from Lüneburg in the north to Celle in the south. The Südheide nature park covers an area of about 500km². Woodlands and heathland, remnants from the middle ages, are now protected as a nature reserve. Well known in the region is the Heidschnucke, a moorland sheep, which lives from the local heather. The perfect destination for a group excursion!

Great starting point for further ride outs

Celle is the perfect base for various excursions, the local roads perfect for Vespa trips. Within a 100 km drive a variety of destinations can be reached. These include: Steinhuder Meer, northern Germany’s largest lake with a circumference of 24 km. Hannover, Lower Saxony’s capital. The Deister hills with their wide variety of flora and fauna.

Vespa Club Celle

The Vespa Club in Celle, founded in 1986, is an active group of passionate Vespa drivers, who are known for combining this passion for Vespas with the importance of family and community. The club organizes regular activities, highlighting in August with its annual “Heidetreffen” in nearby Walle. This scooter rally is one of the largest in Germany, with its reputation of bringing together scooter drivers of all generations and backgrounds as well as being planned with families in mind.

Jerry can for scooters

Hünersdorff “Fuel Friend” transportable jerry cans 1 litre, 2 litres and 3 litres with fuel filler for all petrol nozzles. All of these fit in the glove box of a Vespa.

vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_1-scooter-center

Summertime is the time to travel. Have you ever been in that situation, fearing that the petrol left in your tank won’t last until the next petrol station? Have you even ever had a breakdown due to an empty tank? We know this problem and therefore searched for a solution – and found it:

Today we would like to introduce a reasonable add-on to your tool kit:

Extremely handy transportable jerry cans

Our Hünersdorff jerry cansMade in Germany can usually be filled with a petrol nozzle at the petrol station and have a volume of 1 litre, 2 litres or 3 liters, which comes with the certainty to get to the next opened petrol station.

1 litre jerry can

The 1 litre Fuel Friend is equipped with two very handy flaps at the sides, in order to attach the jerry can safely to the scooter. For a Vespa or Lambretta this happens for example under or on the seat, for a Vespa GTS or Gilera Runner in the luggage box or, according to the type of scooter, the jerry can can be attached under the fairing or to the frame. Thanks to the flaps there are no limits to your creativity.

Very sturdy jerry cans

All FuelFriend cans are very sturdy – a double skin makes it feel like a jerry can from the petrol station but not to be compared in quality. vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_2-scooter-center

2 litre jerry can

We offer two different 2 litre jerry cans:

Fuel Friend 2 liter jerry can

This transportable jerry can has a large mouth and can be filled with petrol nozzles at the petrol station.vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_3-scooter-center

Hünersdorff 2 litre jerry can with integrated spout

This standard Hünersdorff jerry can does not have a large mouth and has to be filled by the help of a funnel. But something special is hidden beneath its small cap: If you detach the cap, you will find a small snorkel. You pull this integrated spout out of the can, which enables you to cleanly fill your tank with petrol.

The Hünersdorff 2 litre jerry can also has a flap to securely attach it to the scooter. Which is missing for the 2 litre “Fuel Friend”.

vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_5

3 litre jerry can

The 3 litre transportable jerry can is traditionally shaped. Even this three litre jerry can can still be fitted in the glove box of a Vespa PX EFL or LML Star. You have to place it vertically – the can won’t leak and on a long ride out three liters of additional petrol really calm you down!

Comparison in size

1 litre / 3 litre / 2 litre

vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_6-scooter-center

Jerry can in the Vespa glove box

Here you can see some pictures of fitting a jerry can and a can of oil in a Vespa PX EFL / T5. 1/2/3 litre jerry can, 1 litre oil and the tool kit easily fit in.

Handy add-on

This isn’t meant to be a “Do you also need a leather care product for your new shoes? – trick”: It really is a helpful and handy add-on to your jerry can.

Safety fuel filler

The safety fuel filler, or to put in in the words of Hündersdorff “filling system for fuel”, fits all standard Hünersdorff jerry cans from 1 to 20 litres.vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_10-scooter-center

Safe and clean thanks to automatic ventilation

It’s annoying when the mix of petrol and oil drops next to the tank! This is not only an ecological and economic waste, but also harms the paint of the scooter. Using the safety fuel filler for jerry cans puts an end to this.

There is an easy explanation: The fuel filler is equipped with an automatic ventilation. A feature you know from racing: Turn the can around and it won’t leak. Only when you push the fuel filler on the tank, the lid will open and petrol is being filled in the tank. When you stop putting pressure on the filler, the jerry can is sealed and won’t leak.

vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_13

vespa-motorroller-reservekanister_14

The air used for ventilation flows through a central opening, while the petrol runs into the tank through openings at the sides. When reducing pressure, a rubber seal will prevent further drops.

You need a jerry can for the car, garage or racetrack? You can find any jerry can in the Scooter Center Scootershop.

Vespa Lambretta Classic Day 2015

Scooter Center Vespa and Lambretta Classic Day 2015

Many thanks go to the many visitors of our Classic Day 2015. The sweet smell of two stroke engines still lingers around the Scooter Center. You really gave our dynamometer some stick. The waiting queue seemed to be endless.

The weather was fine, all sausages were being eaten, the refrigerator truck is empty and we have fewer products in the remaining stock. Which means: you are satisfied and happy – and many of you went home with a great bargain. The 10% discount in the store and our Scootershop was, of course, also a winner.

There will be even more private booths next year – so please make a note: Classic Day 2016 with large market for Vespa and Lambretta parts.

It was a really great day. We are very happy to have such great and loyal customers!

Keep on Scootering.

Vespa exhaust BGM BigBox Sport on dynamometer

Michael Holden from England is a loyal customer of Scooter Center. On his way to his run “holidays in Sauerland” he paid us a short visit and leapt the chance to test the Vespa exhaust BigBox Sport on the dynamometer.

05_2015 001

Vespa PX 200 with Malossi 210 and PHBH30 carburetor

His Vespa is a German Vespa PX200, which he bought when he was deployed in Germany with the British Forces.

The engine is a simple one and is made up of an “old” Malossi 210 cylinder, DellOrto carburetor PHBH 30, Mazzucchelli racing shaft with 57mm stroke and a Taffspeed MK4.

Michael tells us, that the engine was tested with the same parts in England on a Dynojet before he left. The result was 17.88BHP (Brake Horse Power). Giving us a value to compare with, when measuring and to assess whether the engine’s performance went down. The old 210 with the MK4 demonstrated the predicted performance. The difference in values from the Dynojet and from our dynamometer is only a few tenths. So you can see, the two results are comparable.

M. Holden Malossi 210 PHBH30 MK4

The 90s: Taffspeed MK4 Vespa exhaust

At the time (1996 the first systems with TÜV-certificate have been sold in Germany) the MK4 was a good all-rounder with positive performance. A positive performance was reached before having to respond. Overall you can say that an engine is regarded as one that “drives well” on the street, when it reaches at least 10HP from 5000 revs/min and when performance and torque increase with increasing revs. However, the MK4 is an exhaust with just below 18Nm at about 6000 revs/min and therefore forces the driver to change down to a lower gear when being in 4th gear below 90km/h and higher acceleration is demanded.

7320003

The modern racing exhaust: BGM PRO BigBox Sport

When the MK4 was modern, no-one would have thought, that exhausts, which look like lunchboxes, would ever reach such a performance.

For a while now, more powerful exhausts are being developed with looks that resemble the original.

Leading to the BigBox:

Combining the performance of an expansion exhaust chamber with the looks of an original exhaust.BGM Tuning

BigBox Sport vs. Taffspeed MK4

A comparison of BigBox Sport and Taffspeed MK4.

bbs mk4

In contrast to the MK4, the BigBox Sport can add further torque and performance from 4500 revs/min. Comparing the engines on the street, let the scooter seem to drive more easily, because there is more torque for acceleration. The additional torque becomes crucial when the scooter is driven at at least 5500 revs/min on a motorway or highway.

Michael was convinced of the BigBox Sport. He wouldn’t even let us detach the test-exhaust and continued his trip to the Sauerland with a fitted BigBox Sport.05_2015 019

Our tried and tested Vespa auxiliary stand was now improved with a reasonable update:

VESPA AUXILIARY STAND VERSION V2.

By adding two boreholes and a rivet nut, the Vespa auxiliary stand now also comes in handy when the engine was removed from your Vespa.

The engine bolt is only pushed through the frame and the auxiliary stand after the engine was removed.

In the video you can see, that the new auxiliary stand offers flexibility and makes it easy to move the scooter around the garage.

The two supports on the left and right towards the bottom always made it work for left and right handed people. Here you can read the entry on Vespa auxiliary stand V1. From now on we only supply the new version, the product code remains the same!

New Vespa touring exhaust

We received the first production pattern of the BigBox Touring for 200cc Vespa PX engines today.

Assessing looks and fit are part of a normal sample exam. And so are test runs on our Scooter Center P4 dynamometer.

We already mentioned in previous entries relating to this Vespa exhaust, that the BigBox Touring has a drastically smaller U-bend than the BigBox Sport, its larger sister.

BigBox P200_2

The missing black, heat-resistant cover layer makes the BigBox Touring look somewhat naked. We also attach significance to closely assessing all the joints without the cover layer, though.

BigBox P200_3

Test assembly on a Vespa Sprint with a 200cc engine

One of the first parts of the exam was the assembly in a Vespa VLB (Sprint). Usually space issues arise, when fitted in combination with a 200cc PX-engine. Especially around the centre stand, in particular in the “U’s” and the laps for the stand springs. Depending on the assembly of the exhaust, stand feed rubbers might collide with the U-bend.

We especially focused on these narrow spaces to see whether everything fits. The BigBox fits even to vehicles with a two-spring-system at the centre stand, which has only be introduced to the German market. The stand feed rubbers have a save distance to the hot U-bend.

BigBox P200_4

Just as its larger sister the BigBox Touring comes with a solid clamping and additional holders for exhaust springs.

You want to play it safe? Our retaining plate incl. exhaust springs perfectly matches your BigBox.

BGM101HMSR(1)

Performance measurement Vespa exhaust

Once we agree with the looks, processing and fitting we continue with performance measurements.

First “testing victim” is a cast iron Polini with 207cc, SI24 carburetor in a standard Vespa PX200 engine.

bigbox touring 200

Early torque for day to day use and touring

When developing the BigBox Touring we focused on having the possible torque available early and that there is a high amount of pressure in the exhaust with low revs.

The earlier and more homogeneous torque is provided by the engine, the nicer is a day to day drive. Our cast iron test engine by Polini with a BigBox touring reaches more than 18Nm at 3900rpm. Translated to the 4th gear this means smooth cruising at 50km/h with a very good potential to accelerate up to the final revs.

Increased transmission possible

Depending on the engine you fit the BigBox Touring on, an increased primary transmission can be used reasonably to go easy on revs while retaining the same cruising speed. Increasing transmission is easiest when using a clutch sprocket. The BGM clutch sprocket for Cosa clutches or a sustainable solution like our BGM Superstrong clutch are very fitting examples. An increased transmission may increase the top speed by 5km/h at same revs.

Rare Vespa 50SS Smallframe for sale

We currently have some very interesting Vespa Smallframe with round headlight for sale. 3 Vespa 50SS, made in Taiwan by “Taiwan Vespa Co. Ltd.”.

Bild_2_Vespa_50SS-zu-verkaufen

Very rare Vespa models!

The Taiwanese Vespa SS doesn’t have a lot in common with the rare Italian Smallframe SuperSprint models. However, it is a highly interesting Vespa, which is very rare in Europe.

Bild_3_Vespa_50SS-zu-verkaufen

Bild_4_Vespa_50SS-zu-verkaufen

Special characteristics of these Vespa models:

The handlebar immediately catches your eye. It is a little larger than a Primavera handlebar. It slightly resembles a Rally 200 handlebar, which has been reduced in size. Its proportions still perfectly fit the original Vespa Smallframe frame (so sadly no neat SS leg shield).

The diameter of the head light is 140mm, but the flat trim makes it seem smaller than a PX or Rally headlight of the same size. You won’t find any marks on the head lamp, except for an encircled “NL”.

Light switch and indicator switch are made of plastic and resemble the PX old type switches. The speedo has the same size as the Primavera, ET3 or Rally speedo, but is made from grey plastic and was labelled “Taiwan Vespa Co. Ltd.”.

The square mudguard crest, the Vespa logo on the leg shield and levers for brake and clutch have black paint or coating. The rubber floor mat on the frame tunnel was not made as for the Rally, Primavera or ET3, but it has square nubs, just like the Vespa OX old type.

The seat also resembles the seat of a Vespa PX old type in small. The closed four-hole rims have a green metallic coating.

An ignition switch is located at the right hand side of the fuel tap. The 12 Volt rectifier for the 12 Volt PK ignition is fitted in the toolbox below the seat. Removing the toolbox gives way to the winker relay for both handlebar indicators.

Let’s now turn to the unique part, which turns the Smallframe into “SS”. Right above the original ET3 tail light the branding Vespa 50SS is emblazoned in prominent position in chrome against a black background.

The vehicle identification number prefix is V5SA2T.
