Little spring check - what do your cables look like?

The birds chirp it from the trees and roofs, the scooters are fetched from the garage and basement: spring is finally here. It's high time you took a look at the Bowden cables and cable sleeves on your scooter.

The cables are relevant to safety! The ropes mostly operate the brakes, clutch and gas on your scooter. Anyone who has ever seen a scooter hanging at full throttle knows what I'm talking about. A broken train can have fatal consequences. I don't even like to imagine a brake that doesn't work. In the best case scenario, if the clutch cable breaks, you simply have to break down and have to change it on site or get help.

But it doesn't even have to get that far: With a simple function and visual check, you can minimize the risk of a broken cable in advance!

Function test: Are the trains stiff?

Unfortunately, you often don't notice that yourself because you have got used to the loss of comfort. In any case, the slightest creaking noises and even a slight hooking movement when actuated are noticeable. Sometimes the lever does not return to its original position or only hesitantly. Does your throttle not go back by itself? These can all be indicators of worn cables.

A visual check of the cables makes it easier and more certain. Most of the trains are hidden in the frame, but usually no problems arise there. Take a close look at the cable housings and inner cables. If your moves look like this, it's high time you changed them.

Cracked and brittle outer shells are a problem!

But the problem is homemade and only a matter of time: the old, originally installed trains are very simple to assemble. They only consist of a thin, outer casing and a narrow metal spiral in which the inner Bowden cable runs. If the outer shell has become brittle over the years, moisture and dirt can easily get into the track of the train. High wear and tear and stiff trains are the result. That means a security risk and definitely a loss of comfort.

Our wire rope hoists exceed the factory specifications and impress with the highest quality at a low price. All cables in the bgm PRO cable pull have vehicle-specific lengths and can therefore be installed directly without reworking. Particular attention was paid to high-quality details such as double-pressed end sleeves, burr-free nipples or tinned wire ends. Installation is quick and easy.

To make operation easier and more precise, the outer shell of the front brake, gearshift, throttle and clutch have a very low-friction PTFE layer on the inside.
The inner cables can be oiled or greased, but they run extremely smoothly.

Tips:

  1. When assembling the cables and the matching nipples, always make sure that you insert them with a little grease! This makes it easier for the nipple to turn in the lever when it is actuated.
  2. A worn one lever you can recognize it by an oval, enlarged pull nipple seat. And use if possible new clamp nipples.

The adjuster screw and trunnion sets, together with the transmission cables, should be in everyone's glove compartment. These sets fit many models of Vespa and Lambretta scooters and are a useful aid in case of breakdown.

More durable inner cables

The trunnions for the gear change and clutch cables are machined from brass and are provided with small plates.

The brass has a lubricating effect in the gear box and clutch mountings. Thanks to the reduced friction of the trunnion in the mounting, the cables are less subject to stress and the risk of tearing will be strongly minimized.

In the trunnions there are small plates which protect the cables from the notch effect and, as a result, this prevents the splitting of the single filaments when tightening the screw. The inner cable distorts less and thus it can often be untied and be easily tied again. For this procedure we suggest you to use pliers for transmission cables.

The set also includes the suitable Allen key SW 3,5.

Optimized adjuster screws

The adjuster screws of the BGM set are provided with high nuts. Thanks to this new feature, adjuster screws can be easily used also with a normal open-end spanner even in those spots which are difficult to reach. In Vespa smallframe models with two gear change cables it will also be much easier to reach the lock nut.

Optimized trunnions

The trunnions for gear change and clutch cables are now provided with small plates machined from brass.

The small plates prevent the notch effect and also the splitting of the single filaments when tightening the screw. The inner cable distorts less and thus it can be often untied and be easily tied again. For this procedure we suggest you to use pliers for transmission cables.

The trunnion for all Vespa scooters PK-XL2, HP and Cosa FL with the so called one cable gear change are slightly different from the trunnion for the two cable gear change: diameter (Ø7mm), height (12,5mm) and wrench size (2x SW8).

Cable barrels

The cable barrels fit all BGM and Piaggio inner cables. This system allows the cable to move in the barrel when actioned.

The cable barrels with diameter Ø8 and height 9mm are perfect for all Vespa scooters except for PK, PK-S and PK-XL.

Longer service life of the inner cables

The clamping nipples for the shift cables and the clutch cable are made of brass and equipped with pressure plates.

The brass material used for the clamping nipple has a self-lubricating effect in the receptacles of the circuit and clutch.
Due to the lower friction of the clamping nipples in the mount, the cables are less subjected to bending and the risk of the cable breaking at this point is greatly reduced.

In the clamping nipples are small pressure plates that protect the inner cable from deadly notch effects and thus prevent the individual wires from being severed when the clamping screw is tightened. The inner cable is less deformed and can therefore be loosened more often and retightened without any problems. The best way to do this is to use a cable pliers.

The required Allen key in size 3,5 is included in the set.

Optimized adjustment screws

The adjusting screws from the BGM set are with tall nuts equipped. With this small change, the adjustment screws can be operated more easily with a normal open-end wrench even in hard-to-reach places! With the Vespa Smallframe Models with two cables means that the lock nut can be reached thanks to the high design clearly improved.

Optimal clamping nipple

For the clamping nipples for the shift cables and the clutch cable, the version with brass pressure plates is used.

The small pressure plates prevent deadly notch effects and thus protect the inner cable from cutting through the individual wires when the clamping screw is tightened. The inner cable is less deformed and can therefore be loosened and released more often easily retightened become. It is best to have one Cable pliers.

The clamping nipple for all Vespa vehicles PK-XL2, HP and Cosa FL with the so-called 1-train circuit is designed somewhat differently than the well-known counterpart for the 2-train circuits.
The differences can be found here in the diameter (Ø7mm), the overall height (12,5mm) and the wrench size (2x SW8). Due to the slightly higher design, this clamping nipple is also ideal for use on the coupling arm.

Pear nipple adapter

The pear nipple adapters are suitable for all BGM and Piaggio inner cables. This system allows the train to move freely in the adapter under loading and unloading.
We also addressed this topic in our train sets.

The pear nipple adapters in the dimension Ø8x9mm are practically suitable for all Vespa scooters EXCEPT the Vespa PK, PK-S and PK-XL.

For all PK generations before the PK-XL2, the stepped pear nipple adapters in the dimension Ø9x11mm are suitable.
