Modern Vespa scooter For us, “Modern Vespa” are the new series of Vespas that Piaggio launched with the Vespa ET in 1996 for the 50th birthday of the Vespa. Followed by the Vespa GT, LX, GTS, GTV with modern automatic transmission and 4-stroke engine. Piaggio has been using old type designations for new models since 2013. Starting with the new Vespa Primavera (successor to the Vespa LX). In the meantime there is also a new Vespa Sprint. The main (external) difference is, as the name suggests, in the frame.

Largeframe Models are based on weight and dimensions greater.
Wideframe - The frame and therefore also the swing arm are wider.

Wasp Largeframe

Largeframe are the large Vespas, the models that were available with the highest performance in the delivery condition: 80 - 200 cc and up to 12 HP. The side hood ("cheek") on the engine side is always completely removable. Vespa Largeframe-Models are for example:

  • Vespa PX,
  • rally,
  • Sprint,
  • DSO,
  • T4, etc

The success story of the Vespa Largeframe-Models still lasts thanks to the Vespa PX. It started with the Vespa 125 VNA in 1958. The bodies of these scooters are very similar and many parts, including the engines, are interchangeable. In conjunction with our conversion wiring harness, the PX motors fit into all of them with ease Largeframe- models. However, you have to find a solution here, how to get either 8 or 10 inches at the front and back.

But even the original engines can be adapted with the tuning cylinders of the PX 80 to 150 class to the requirements of modern traffic, which has become a little faster. A step that unfortunately does not work on models that do not yet have the rotary valve and on very early Vespa rotary valve models, the brass bushing in the upper connecting rod eye and the nose piston stand in the way of these steps.

From the models Vespa 125 and 150 (VNB and VBB) the DR 177 can be installed very easily. The third overflow channel in the cylinder is closed with a special cylinder base seal, so the cylinder also fits perfectly on the 2-channel engine. Well coordinated, with the SI 24/24 carburetor and the BigBox exhaust provided, one achieves the driving and engine performance of a PX 200. This allows you to swim relaxed and easily in traffic and even overland parts are taken away from the horror.

Wasp Smallframe

The "small" Vespa models originally have a maximum displacement of 125 ccm. For example Vespa PK 125, or Vespa Primavera / ET3.

Most are with Smallframe but meant the 50 cc scooter. The framework of the Smallframe-Models are narrower and lighter. On the engine side there is only a flap to get to the spark plug and the like. Wasp Smallframe Models are e.g.

  • Vespa V50,
  • Vespa PK,
  • Vespa Primavera.

The Vespa narrow-frame models are characterized by a much more compact frame, as the name suggests. The handling of this scooter is unparalleled. The history of the Vespa began Smallframes 1963 with the V50 and the V90 and ended in the 90s with the Vespa HP 50, which had an aluminum cylinder with five overflow channels as standard. Other prominent representatives among the Smallframes are the ET3 models with electronic ignition and the small, very rare and valuable Super Sprint models.

Wasp Wideframe

These are the first Vespa models from the early 50s. The oldest models with the great, wide side panels. All Vespas have a flap under the seat Wideframe  Models. You have the wide frame because of the very wide motor traverse. Models of this type are for example:

  • Lamp below ("Faro Basso"),
  • Vespa T1 "Struzzo", T2, T3
  • Vespa GS1, GS2, GS3. ...

The Vespa Wideframe-Models can be recognized at first glance by the flap in the passage under the bench. They start with the first Vespa, the V98 from 1946 and the construction period ends with the Vespa GS 150 (VS5) 1961. Here you can find both the models with the lamp on the front fender, the so-called "Faro Basso or lamp below" , as well as the early Vespa models with bicycle handlebars and the first models with a completely cast handlebar.
